Even people who don’t Ike their vegetables seem to flip over kale chips. A tiny bag of them at the Santa Monica Co-op is about 8 bucks. And, if you’ve ever bought them, you know you don’t really wanna share yours. These crunchy, salty bites of BLISS are all the rave in the raw food community.
Yet, with so many of us dealing with low thyroid function, it’s important to know that raw cruciferous veggies do contain goitrogens, which are thyroid inhibitors. Too many raw cruciferous vegetables like kale, collard greens, cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts can slow your thyroid function.
Remember that your thyroid is responsible for energy, speed of digestion, hormone balance, sex drive and more! Most people notice the effect in their depleted energy levels. They get tired. You might need a major nap after downing a handful of raw kale chips if they are slowing your thyroid.
Plenty of peeps seem to do just fine with them. But, my clients tend to be very sensitive and dealing with complicated autoimmune issues. So, I try to come up with recipes that are more easily digestible than what’s popular. Yet just as yummy.
I’ve learned that fermenting allows you to enjoy these enzyme-rich foods in their raw form without the negative effects– because the fermentation process pre-digests the vegetables. But, fermented kale chips don’t taste so great!
I believe this recipe is a little bit healthier for our ever-loving-thyroids because it gets broken down a little and then dehydrated at a higher temperature. They are delish! I’m mucho sensitive, and I can eat a whole batch with no problemo.
I’ll have more info coming up on thyroid and adrenal health as I’m going to be experimenting with balancing my own endocrine system.
Lots of kale ( we like dinosaur kale the best for chips)
1 lemon per bunch of kale
Dash of apple cider vinegar
We like to keep our kale leaves whole when using dinosaur kale, and we tear them apart by hand if using the more leafy kind.
Clean up your kale and cut off the fibrous stem part. Then, let it dry naturally.
Use your taste buds to help you gauge the amount of spices to use. Taste as you go. I like a lot of spice. Give your kale a good massage with lemons, apple cider vinegar, oil and the spice mixture. Then allow it to marinate overnight in a covered glass bowl or pan.
Then, line up your chips so that none are touching and air can circulate, and dehydrate these beauties at a slightly warmer temp. I do 150 degrees in my Excalibur dehydrator until crispy. It takes about 5 hours.
Or, you can line your kale up on a pizza pan or non toxic baking dish and bake at your lowest temp until crispy.
Do you love figs? I do! And, besides eating them in the wildly delicious gluten-free newtons from the Santa Monica Co-op, I had to figure out what else to do with the things so that my obsession didn’t get boring. Naturally, I went to fermentation. I’ve tried to ferment almost everything you can think of from green beans to chocolate to spice mixes and teas. It’s not always a success. But, this my dears…this figgy frenzy was a fermentation feat for my record book. In fact, I often serve this in my classes and bring it to parties.
Figs are full of sugar, so naturally they have what it takes to feed the healthy probiotics in the fermentation process. Leaving them to ferment for 24 hours doesn’t produce alcohol for me. So, it’s all good. The fermentation simply breaks down the sugar and makes the whole shabang easier to digest, and also offers you some healing pro-bugs for your beautious digestive tract.
Fermentation also makes the minerals and fiber more bioavailable to you. That means that your body will actually accept more nourishment from these delicious fruits in their fermented state.
Figs are very alkalizing and have the energy to help your stomach, spleen and pancreas do their jobs, and get food and fluids moving through and balanced. No wonder why I love them so. I found myself having spleen/stomach problems a while back. Sweet foods have a necessary role in health besides providing us with caloric energy and enjoyment. They can be very supportive and tonifying. Of course, the more figgy love you have, the closer to the bathroom I recommend you stay. The little guys can also be quite a laxative.
If you’re on a candida cleanse or doing Body Ecology, you may feel the need to stray from all sugars. We did that for a while and it worked for us. However, when I started adding in more fermented foods and fermenting salad dressings and stuff like that– our whole family came to be able to process sugar much better. In fact, we also became able to process fats, proteins, and carbs much better too. We no longer think sugar is evil. We like it. And our adventures into fermentation have taken away all of those wicked cravings for the sugar beast.
How many times have you wished that you defied the logical choice and went with your “gut?” If the words “I just knew it” cross your lips more than occasionally then, I ask you: what’s stopping you from going with your gut?
Sure, we can’t always prove the truth behind these hunches, so relying solely on instinct gets tough.
But, here’s why you need to pay more attention to those little voices inside you.
Oprah Says So
We’re not huge Oprah fans. But the fact that main stream-media covered a topic that speaks to the very work we do in the alternative health world is quite promising. The March 2007 issue of “O Magazine” ran a fairly comprehensive article about the logic behind using our guts to decide our next moves. Citing the re-discovery of the enteric nervous system (also known as the second brain), in the 1980’s as scientific proof that “thinking” happens in our bellies.
We now know that our brains and guts vibrationally communicate with each other through this enteric nervous system. ( and, in fact, DNA changes as a result of this same type of inner vibrational communication). Your gut sends at least double the information to your brain than your brain sends to your gut. The balance of healthy bacteria and yeast in your digestive system aids in this communication process.
Main-stream media continues to half-cover important health topics like digestive health and intuitive thinking. In fact, a recent headliner about the dangers of sugar even provoked my mother to write me about what she’d seen on the news. Over-use of sugar may be related to poor gut health and therefore a botched line of communication from gut to brain, pathogenic candida overgrowth and brain fog. The truth is that most of my clients are suffering from candida, and have a difficult time understanding their gut feelings. But, it’s not just sugar that is the culprit. I’ve experienced more candida flare up (in myself, family and clients) as a result of imbalanced eating and stress. When the main-stream media tells you that sugar is bad, it inspires a frenzy of guilt-ful eating of sugar, disordered and restrictive eating, and stress.
What I’d like to see is a media who tells you what is really healthy. One who tells you about the fermented foods, good fats and super nutrient dense whole foods (not GMO) that help balance the micro-organisms in your gut and naturally allow for the flow of clearer intuitive thinking.
The trick is that when something on the boob tube catches your eye and feels like it could be right, go do your own research in books and online. Gently experiment with yourself. Maybe you’re not clear on what your gut is saying to you now, but thankfully nature has given us many tools for practice. The very act of trusting your gut allows for clearer messages to come through. And, believe it or not — trusting your gut also vibrationally heals bacteria/yeast imbalance.
Our own familiy’s healing from autism, heavy metal poisons and various infections began with a rigorous Body Ecology Diet which worked rather quickly to heal our physical guts by replenishing necessary healthy bacteria and yeast with fermented foods. And, one of the most valuable lessons I learned was that trusting my gut meant I couldn’t follow that diet forever. We dabbled In the healing powers of raw foods and saw great results for 2 years. We dabbled in super foods, raw meat eating, and some GAPS and Westin A Price Protocol. Then, finally I began studying Chinese Medicine and have come to realize that intuitive eating is the best way to keep balance and full health for our family. I now teach my clients how to honor their gut instincts and keep their physical guts in the best shape possible so that they can truly hear what their bodies are telling them regardless of what some guru or book tells them.
Soon, I even learned that I could gauge my physical health based upon how clear my intuition is. After the gut healing Body Ecology Diet, I became really psychic. But, once that work was done, I would experience brain fog if I overdid “healing foods” like coconut kefir or algaes. Sometimes gut balance for me meant eating bread… The very beast that I was told was the cause of my problems in the first place.
Trusting your gut and knowing yourself is an endless journey. We learn more each day, but it’s important to take action on what we learn if we want to see real changes in our health. It’s easier than you might think.
Try this O Mag. inspired exercise:
Have a seat in a comfy chair, take a deep breath and clear your mind (as much as you can). Now, push firmly on your abdomen. Is it soft and pliable, or does it feel hard and tense? If you are truly relaxed, your gut should show it with flexibility. Now – think of your job, your in-laws, or something that you know stresses you. After briefly concentrating on the stressor – feel your belly. The gut tenses up during stress. Doesn’t it?
Ancient Cultures Believed in Gut Thinking
In the Western world we’ve got our brains and our hearts to help make decisions. We are either logical thinkers because we use our brains to consider all facts. Or, we are emotional saps because we use our hearts to “feel” our way to the answers. Society tends to favor straight logic because we like to see physical results. But, in eastern culture emotions and logic are intertwined in the gut. We think because we feel and both are of equal importance.
Eastern philosophies have been healing people and keeping them well for at least a documented 2000 years. New science continues to prove the valid relationship between organ function that now can be measured and ancient practices like acupuncture and energy meridians that come from China. The cool thing is all of this can be easily adapted and proven in your own life without huge cost or pain.
Try it and see.
Think about how relieving it would be if you didn’t feel compelled to second-guess your intuition. Does thinking like this cause your tummy to relax?
The Power of Thought Can Help You or Haunt You
If you’ve got a sneaking suspicion that your boss isn’t going to like your new proposal, and you don’t address the subject – you may be setting yourself up for failure. Keeping looming thoughts internalized, without changing the physical situation may cause you to foul on the job just because you are focussing on what you don’t want. We can make ourselves fail by thinking that we will. However, if we address the problem we can let go of negative thinking. If you simply go to your boss with an outline and a few questions just to make sure you’re on track with what he/she wants — you may find out that your presumption was silly. But, you’ll save yourself from causing unnecessary stress.
Have you got a major decision to make right now? Feel your gut as you consider your options. It should soften as you come to the choice that is most comfortable for you. Going with the comfortable choice means that you can put all of your positive efforts into succeeding.
Most of us are fully aware that the holistic approach to healing begins in the gut. Vitamins are made in our digestive systems, our immunity and moods are determined there too. In yoga, we breathe into our abdomens, and our bellies are the core of all feelings.
So, it’s not far-fetched that that little notion you had to call your sister might be right on the mark.
The next time you get a hunch about what numbers to play, or how to help a buddy out of a sticky situation – Listen to your gut. Take the time to feel what your gut is telling you, and go with it.
What might happen if you didn’t go with instinct on some important decisions?
Last week I shared with you that we were all born with natural intuitive abilities that can be measured through the work of our pineal glands. This gland is also called our third eye, and is known to become calcified with age and toxicity overload from diet and environment. This calcification severs our intuitive connection. Because children are “newer” in their bodies, they are usually born very connected and able to intuitively respond to their own needs. Children know just how to give their bodies what they require in the moment. They make noise when they need something beyond their reach and they won’t stop until that they’re fulfilled. They sleep, laugh, cry, poop and react to change on cue with their own desires. The psychic child is one who stays connected to that intuitive gift. The psychic adult is one who remains connected throughout life. We all have the ability to tap into this gift. We’re going to chat about the connection between very psychic children and those with special needs, autism, aspbergers, allergies, and developmental delays. But before we do that, I want to give you some hints on how I define the term “psychic.” Psychics are those who can feel, see, smell, hear and sense subtle energies (that we are all made up of) and interpret, and respond to them. This needn’t be a verbal interpretation. A psychic may be able to sense danger, hear a warning, or see a spirit for example. Psychics are not prophets who can change or manipulate the future. When a glimpse is given of the future — this merely solidifies it as one possibility. We can influence it with our thoughts, but no one person has that much control. Psychic ability helps to connect with spirits and beings from other dimensions of reality. Many children lose this ability at around age 7. But, we can help nurture it. Their skulls actually fully harden by this time. So, this is when most of the connection that was held on to in their earlier years can be cut off, A psychic’s first responsibility is to to the self. Growth is the main goal. Our psychic ability will lead us to growth. This does not mean that it will always lead us down Blissy Lane. But, Intuitive hits for self care and self preservation are huge gifts of our intuition. If we listen carefully, we can connect to all of it. Even when hints are given about others, I always see a connection to how it can help myself. So, we are born with this gift mainly to help us Thrive.
Psychic Sensitivity and Special Needs
Can you sense subtle energies? Can you feel exactly when you neeeeeed an avocado? Do you just KNOW what color to wear today, what to say to the friend who asks for advice, or what time it is now without a watch? The deeper your sensitivities are to energies like that — often the deeper your sensitivities are to food, toxins, lights, sounds, people, places, weather, etc. Does this sound like your kids? So, these sensitivities go hand in hand. Everything is made up of energy. Little balls of potential are at the core of every human, every crayon, every steak… You get my drift. If your child can so strongly sense the hurtful energies in gluten that he manifests a rash, seizure or spinning spell just to expel that poison from his body, understand that he is reacting intuitively and healthfully for his body. There are some people who seem of be able to scarf down canned chilli-cheese sandwiches with antibiotic-laden ice cream without flinching. They go back to their computer after lunch and hum a happy tune. What would happen if our kids ate something so un-natural? Children with autism and allergies (and those who are on the spectrum of psychicness) are usually sensitive to things that are unnatural. That is because the man-made energetic vibration of things like fluorescent lights inhibits their psychic ability. Their ability to understand how to Thrive. Ultimately, their bodies want to be in balance, so they will create reactions that help bring them into balance. They will strike against that which inhibits their purpose here. When I meet an adult who is as sick as my son was with heavy metal poison, digestive problems, allergies, exhaustion and not “knowing” what to eat to make them feel better — I always encourage them to consider how to use their psychic abilities. Their bodies are reacting adversely to everything they eat, and they feel complete unrest because they have shut off the mechanism that can save them. But, the very fact that they are so sensitive tells me they have and are unconsciously using this ability. As grown-ups, we can understand choices like this and mentally make the decision to change things. Incidentally, if you are an adult with massive sensitivities, you might just be a hidden healer. You can begin using your sensitivity to help you gauge how you react to specific foods and toxins. And, you can use this ability to help others. That was me. Sharing is part of the healing process. You don’t have to be sick to be sensitive. You can find healthy outlets for this part of you. Our kids don’t always have the intellectual luxury of knowing why or how toxins (to them) will effect them. Yet, their intuitive abilities take over and their bodies go into “fight” mode. We know that purifying their lives by consuming all natural, chemical-free products eases those painful reactions. And, once we do that, we begin to see less pain and more of those psychic gifts. That’s right, as you clean up diets and lifestyles — you get MORE (not less) of the magic that is really behind autism and the spectrum.
Sensitive Child Psychic Child
If we heal our kids while they are young, we will see the true benefits that these very psychic children want to bring to us. Will all of them always be this sensitive? Probably not! We can do wonders for curing food allergies…. We did in our home. And those abilities can be re-directed. My son can eat wheat, corn and dairy now (He doesn’t have it every day). And now he uses his psychic ability to tell me exactly what he needs to eat, how life was in his past lives and who is lying to us. (I’m going to talk more about this is Part 3). Those who were once sensitive to wheat and gluten can perhaps heal, and instead be sensitive to that vibration and understand when someone has a wheat or gluten sensitivity. This is what happened for me in my adult life. But, the possibilities are endless. A psychic child whose painful sensitivities have been healed, has the power to use that intuitive gift for whatever he desires. In fact, if he only uses it to keep his own health in Thrive-mode– think of all the beauty the world will see because he is healthy in it.
Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, Environmental Foundations for Autism and Psychic Children
We all come here as part of our soul’s path to growth, and to assist in the growth of our collective soul (not the 90’s band… But our one true whole self). There is a lot that goes into the choice to incarnate in a specific time, place, body and with specific traits. It’s all for the growth of our ever expanding self. We make agreements. We choose our parents and our path. Let’s look into why a soul might incarnate as someone with autism and special psychic gifts at this time, and why more and more are doing so.
Spiritual Reasons Behind Autism
A soul with autism is a soul on a journey who has acquired enough wisdom to demonstrate to their brothers and sisters a more clear path to enlightenment. Many of them were around during times of ancient civilizations like Atlantis where they became well-versed in extremely advanced technologies. However, from a soul’s glance, they saw that humanity would not be accepting of old ways of teaching just yet. They needed to enter in a way that would get noticed, and this had to be quite extreme. They are advanced enough to understand how to flutter in and out of direct consciousness if things in their body get too difficult to handle, but they knowingly chose bodies that would get ill in order to bring healing and new perspective to the world.
Emotional Reasons Behind Autism
A soul with autism has been around since the beginning of time. They have felt pain and held it in until the time was right to release it through human existence. Now is that time when they are able to release the burden of being held back, silenced, poisoned, rejected etc. Emotional outbursts are beautiful cleanings their body was afforded because of their courageous spiritual gift to us. I see them clearing this in this lifetime.
Physical Reasons Behind Autism
A soul with autism often has problems in every physical bodily system. This is to show the earth that everything is connected. We lost our connection, and it has been decided by our collective self, that autism can be looked at as a physical symbol of what is happening on our planet. Problems often begin in the gut, which is symbolic of our core, root chakra and feminine energy. Autism shows us what we can physically do to connect spiritually, and what can happen if we don’t.
Environmental Reasons Behind Autism
A soul with autism is going to call out the negative for a great cleansing! It is going to be so sensitive to energies that hurt us all like vaccinations, GMO food, processed foods, and carcinogenic household cleaning tools, that humanity will be forced to notice. And, that soul will be so soothed by Earth’s natural healing vibrations that humanity will be forced to notice. It is meant for autism to be triggered by these energies, so that we as a race can be moved beyond relying on them — and instead nurture and rely on our planet.
Time doesn’t mean all that much. Except, when you realize that this year and surrounding chunks of time have a specific SHIFT energy to them. We are truly evolving to the next phase. We are experiencing inter-planetary climate change. Forget global warming… It doesn’t exist. We are going through an evolutionary shift into higher consciousness. This consciousness is what connects us to our own psychic powers and to each other. You may notice that the population has risen and children with autism are on the rise too. Do not Blame environmental triggers. Yes, vaccines do trigger autism. Yes, we can prevent our kids from getting sick by choosing natural parenting, organic whole foods, natural immunizing — but souls with autism chose to be here to guide us into this shift. Help heal them now if they are sick. The sooner we realize that we, like them, need to listen to our bodily urges to sing, cry, dance, laugh or call out someone who is lying…. The sooner we won’t need autism. The sooner we can step into our own powerful psychic roles (whatever that means for us), the sooner we won’t need autism. It will no longer be classified as a disease or a disorder. Instead, you will look toward these people who were once labeled with it and ask for guidance. As we move forward on this path to enlightenment, we hit bumps in the road. We experience self doubt or we get sick. We can look at how the sickness behind autism is healed and we can learn how to heal our bodies and our minds. They chose to help us do this because they are really magnificent beings. And remember, they chose us to be their parents because they know we will always do right by them. Now, let us help them Thrive, so their message can be heard.
Check out this necessary video by David Wilcock. It speaks to all of the connections we have and what I believe autism and these children have come here to help us achieve.

Some of my near and dear friends have put together this program to help on your journey through eating disorders. Through my research and experience working with people who have autism and digestive illness — I meet many people who are dealing with eating disorders and looking for healing. There are so many similarities behind the conditions — candida and parasites, metal and chemical toxicity to emotional trauma. Therefore, I know there’s a way to feel better. I wish you love on your journey. And, Know that you have friends to see you through it.
Dougie was once diagnosed with autism, and was very sick with candida yeast infections, vaccine poison, heavy metals, viruses, parasites, bacterial infections, food allergies and more. He began regressing developmentally at age 2 or slightly before. He did display all symptoms of autism, and in fact, we were told he was severe by the Chicago Schools. Some said he would never talk. We were more worried that he was very physically ill and also that he had dangerous tendencies like lack of awareness and not being able to protect himself (walking outside, crossing street). We wanted our son to have the best chance at health possible. We completely changed our lives, diet and spirituality. As we unpeeled layers of physical illness, the autism symptoms surfaced and left. He is 7 and quite healthy now. We homeschool him and we all love it,
These are our latest videos. Dougie loves outer space and making films. He draws story boards and films himself.
I’m in awe. It’s so inspiring when people take their lives into their own hands and do what they know is best for them and their families. We had Dougie in the “normal” way–at the hospital. I asked my doctor about a water birth, because that’s what I really wanted. But, I hadn’t done enough research at the time to know there were other ways to have a baby than at a hospital. Now this all seems natural and normal to me and I’m grateful that there are people like Matt and Angela out there, showing us what it’s like to embrace nature.
Babies have been being born healthy and happy since the beginning of time without intervention style birthing, I’m so thrilled for Baby Oria, who chose to come into this world through the absolutely gorgeous way her parents and Mother Nature designed for her. It seems so peaceful and welcoming,
He got really bad diarrhea. Really bad sore throats and ear aches. He coughed a lot. He threw up a lot. He didn’t want to eat. He needed medicine so we got it for him. He fought us when giving him the medicine. While, we thought it was the best thing for him, the strength with which he fought was quite extraordinary. It made me think deeper.
Within the first five months of this illness (we don’t have any other word for this, but illness), I was on the phone with several doctors and nurses inquiring when this medicine would take effect… And why he would fight me so hard? Did they think that maybe he instinctively knew he was allergic to the meds? Nope. According to them, he was just sick…. Like all kids get, and this would end one day. But, he “needed that medicine.”
When I made the decision to fight his infections naturally, and took away the meds– he began getting healthier right away. We still had prescriptions left in the bottles, and I was using some of the first remedies I’d learned about: garlic, cayenne, raw honey, vitamin c and colloidal silver. We could tell he was healing because he got an appetite, and seemed less irritable. But we were a long way from Thriving.
I have to admit that I didn’t do any research on vaccines before deciding to get them. My doubts were merely gut feelings. I also couldn’t figure out why the nurse in my doctor’s office was telling me that I could choose… In not so many words, she was giving me the choice. Nonetheless, a few months off the regular vaccine schedule– my son went in to get his 18 month shots. And when I got home from work, he was sitting on the chair very lethargically. I called the doctor, and was told that this could be a reaction to the shot. I can’t remember if I gave him Tylenol that time. But,that was suggested to me.We used to give it to him before every shot to prevent fever, and it worked. Little did we know that Tylenol blocks glutathione — our bodies’ natural way of detoxing.
Before becoming sick, our angel loved to eat a variety of healthy foods. He loved zucchini, tomatoes, avocados and blueberries. He was only 2 years old when he first got sick, so he was mostly eating whole unprocessed foods. But, he’d had bread without a negative reaction. After getting sick, he only wanted carbs and sugary foods like pizza and French fries. His belly was very distended.
I set out to understand what was making him sick, because even after using my natural remedies, Dougie still had awful digestive and bowel problems. I felt I needed to get him to eat right. But, I was no longer sure what that meant. Most of his time by now was spent staring or crying. He wasn’t very mobile. I tried holding him, but at times he didn’t want me. So, I tried making him as comfortable as I could.
I was sad. I wanted to make sure he was happy, and he sure wasn’t. He often cried for spans of 12 hours at a time. Soon, I learned that there was a certain thing I could do with my hands that REALLY worked. All I had to do was touch him with a certain vibration running through me ( it was something I felt emotionally and physically but could not explain), and he would stop crying and seem very comforted.
The way Dougie was acting when he wasn’t in pain and sadness really resembled autism. I’d cared for and befriended many people with autism in my life before Dougie was born. I’d even had dreams and waking premonitions that I’d have a child with special needs. I’d seen him exactly as he was then in dreams years before he was born. These were dreams I discussed with my husband when I’d had them, but forgotten about until I took a breath and saw what was happening before my eyes.
So, on one hand I had a sick child who I knew was going to heal. I just wasn’t sure how. On the other hand, I had a child who was showing signs of autism. Sometimes these symptoms meant he would line things up, stare, hand flap or be obsessive over certain toys like Thomas the train. Signs that he has an amazing brain. Something I wanted to know more about. Other symptoms were toe walking, spinning and spreading poop on the walls. Some of these things could get dangerous, So, I made attempts to help him do them more safely. I spun with him in public to show him how cool he is. I took him to parks where he banged the monkey bars to hear the sound, and I joined him. I think he knew he was cool. He still does. He doesn’t care one bit about what people think about him and, he is my greatest inspiration.
So, in the spirit of doing what was right for him, I called my aunt who is a special ed teacher. I was first doing what I was trained to do, and then doing my own research, prayers and meditation in the background….trying to cover all bases and give Dougie the best life possible.
I set up evaluations for him so that we could get any kind of special services that he might need. I got lots of help from my aunt who taught me a little about Neuro-Diversity. Yes! That brilliant brain idea of different thinkers–that felt like my child. The idea that some people’s brains are simply wired differently. I knew that was part of our puzzle. I began to notice some signs that came before he got sick. Like how he rolled over early and talked early. He also really vibrated uniqueness. Not in the standard sense of genius..something more and different.
It’s a damn good thing that I had pneumonia for five months when this was happening, because– I too was craving yeasty/sugary foods, and having the worst digestive problems. My gut was so swollen that my mom thought I was hiding a pregnancy. So, I drank the kefir too. This was when BLISS started happening.
Within one week, Dougie had eye contact back. His tummy was going down. He was trying different food. Wow! I hadn’t asked for his eye contact. Yes, I wondered what happened to it. Yes, it was a symptom of autism. I started feeling better and noticing that my illness was going away. What’s more is that a major brain fog was lifting. I’d been having small seizures and passing out. We discovered that Dougie was too. The kefir was helping us think more clearly, and stop having seizures. Suddenly things in our family calmed down. Less crying… Still lots, but way less. More trying healthier foods without tantrums. Every day our strengths and physical health got better.
As Dougie healed physically, those classic autism symptoms came up. We were convinced he had it. And, we continued on with evaluations even though we absolutely hated the idea of having our kid labeled and evaluated by “experts.” I found that many children with autism have these painful gut issues and that Dougie was tantruming because he was in awful pain. The pain I experienced in my body was nothing compared to what he was feeling. I joined a support group of moms who are still the smartest people I have ever met. Together, we were helping our kids heal from food allergies, leaky gut, candida and more though diet.
By this time I discovered the deep connection between autism and gut health. I knew that some people had already lost their autism diagnosis after balancing out the body with dietary therapies. That was intriguing. And Hopeful.
Dougie was spinning, licking everything in sight, staring, lining things up –all classical symptoms of autism. And, we could see these symptoms coming out as he physically healed. He still wasn’t talking and we wondered if he every would. He was our angel and he was getting well, and we were all so happy that we were getting some sleep and even able to go out and have fun together again. It didn’t matter to us if Dougie ever talked. It didn’t matter to us if Dougie always had sensory issues. But, we were determined to give him everything in our power to teach him what we know, and introduce him to people who could teach him more. I’m patient, and I understand him on a vibrational level. Yes, there were times of mass confusion when I didn’t know what he had slipped into his mouth while I was in the bathroom (and most of the time he had to come with me to the bathroom).
If my child was going to grow up to be someone who spread poop on the walls, stared at walls and hand flapped–I would understand. I would do my best to teach him safe and healthy ways to treat his body and others. But, I would love and accept him no matter what he is or does. Incidentally, he stopped spreading poop on the walls after I engaged him in the clean-up process.
There is a beautiful mind, and there is sickness. A beautiful mind can also sometime get sick. Many of the people who I have met over the years with autism have taught me infinitudes about uniqueness, genius and of course, Neuro-Diversity. This is the beautiful mind part. Dougie healed each day, and less illness and more genius was making its way to the surface. His memory is amazing.
Dougie was detoxing out really gross things including parasites in his poop. One day while sitting on the toilet, he said, “my name is Dougie. I am 4 years old.” That was his first statement after getting sick. It had been years since he said anything that wasn’t just repetitive. I cried. He didn’t say much after that for a while. But, I noted that he said it after releasing a lot of frothy, foamy, gross stuff in his poop. Candida. Yuk!
He did get an evaluation and label of autism at age 3. He spent 2 years in speech and occupational therapies that were hard on him. We pulled him from the services because the people treated him like he was sick. Like he would never get better. We didn’t want any experts who knew nothing about us–working with our child.
That is, He was completely changing and becoming happier. He was talking clearly and wanting to socialize. He stopped all self injurious behavior (which flared up during times of detox, and we discovered was his body’s way of handling the inner stress of detoxing poisons).
He learns differently. He doesn’t understand “regular” ways of teaching math and science –which makes things much more fun for us. My husband and I get down on the floor with him and build puzzles. Dance. Drum. Sing kirtan. He “gets” so much on a much deeper level than most adults I know. There are concepts that Dougie understands far beyond the ability of his peers. Yet, there are things that kids his age say and do that he doesn’t vibe with. Each and every person in this world offers unique gifts. As adults, it’s socially easier to be different. We can specialize in one topic if we want, and make a great life out of it. Children are subject to so much judgement, and expected to be the same. Part of unscholling means changing this paradigm.
We really don’t like labels. We use them on this site to help people who want our help. But, we don’t define Dougie as anything but himself. We don’t mind if people say that he never had autism or that he still has it. That’s their prerogative and distraction. We love Dougie and know that his mind is very special. That’s why we helped him heal it.
Everything that happens on an inner level in our bodies and minds, is representative of what’s going on globally. We are all connected to one another and to our planet. I see autism as a symbol of what is going on on the planet. Our planet needs more special care and attention. Honoring our uniqueness and diversity honors our planet too. Things that harm the planet harm us on many levels. Our planet’s cry for help is representative of autism’s cry for help. I believe that the neuro-diverse mind has something very necessary to our survival. And that our planet is begging us to listen to them. My son Dougie can see Reiki when I do it for him. He wants it and loves the way it feels. Since cleaning up my life, I too am extremely psychic. I believe that it is the tapping into this psychic power…. The other side of our brains, that will help save us. Our planet will be fine. She’s just giving us clues about what we need to survive.
There are infinitudes of science to back up these beliefs, but then again you can find science to back up most claims these days. This is our story so far. And, it’s as true as my soul can muster. I had a beautiful child who got sick, and now he is thriving beyond belief. Label makers called it autism. I saw many layers underneath that could be cured. And, as we undid food allergies, metal poison and digestive issues– lo and behold the illness part went away. Some people glorify autism, and I don’t understand why. But, it’s okay with me if they want to use it to define themselves. We don’t. When Dougie’s older, he can decide if he wants to. To me, It’s just a label created by folks to put others in a box so they could understand them better. It cannot describe an individual. We are not proud of autism, as we are not proud democrats, republicans, Christians etc… These are labels that separate us. What we need is to come together and love one another… Or at least love ourselves enough to not have the need to judge others.
When I was a child, I used to hand flap, toe walk and line up soda bottles. I hated jeans for the way they felt on my skin. I was terrified to talk to many people I knew. I could see energy in the air. I knew things about people I didn’t want to know. I remembered being a nun in a past life, but none of it made sense to me when I tried to understand myself based on what my parents and religion taught me. I grew up just slightly different, I wrote a lot. I began writing a novel about a girl with these abilities. Is she Neuro-Diverse? Perhaps.
I got great grades in school without trying, but struggled with headaches, infections of all kinds, and as I got older — fainting spells. I was never really physically healthy until now. Because my son got sick, he inspired me to make the changes I also needed to balance my whole life. I do believe we all can thrive. And, that we get to choose what that means to us.
I believe my son chose me because I’m the perfect match for him on this lifetime’s adventure. I believe that there is so much beauty in being different and choosing different paths. I support you on yours no matter what you choose.
We just wanted to share some of Dougie’s moments of fame over the last few years. All of these vids are from May 07-Mar 2010, so they began after we were on Body Ecology and Raw Food for some time. I’ll get some more recent ones up soon!
This pic is of him on Valentines Day 2010 with his daily mantra” I Have Big Love.”
I so enjoy seeing how happy he was through all of this ( of course, once we changed his diet). His autism diagnosis taught us so much, and we are grateful that he is so much healthier and happier now.
The other night a friend and I laughed at how I knew all the words to some obscure Air Supply song. I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for those tunes my younger bro and I sang in front of the TV while watching “Solid Gold.” Up until 2 days ago, anything 1980’s or chocolate, or crocheted, or anything resembling a cupcake were all guilty pleasures. Not anymore. The guilt is gone and I’m jammin with my Trader Joe’s gluten-free vegan ginger snaps– that I am eating sans guilt despite the sugar.
A lot of guilt goes into and comes out of changing to the “healthier” side of things, you know what I mean? But, the worst I’ve created for myself comes from what I decide I want to eat. Once you dive into learning what goes into our food — from the ingredients to the energy, processing, and scams behind who is making money by poisoning us with chemicals, gmos, and godknowswhat, your higher self doesn’t want to go back. Healthy food makes you feel food. It tastes good. And us smart and savvy peeps have found ways to even make it cost less, prevent and heal illness and give us enough energy to stay feeling young for long.
Coming to Chicago to visit family and make our first Bliss Tour stop has taught me that I’ve had to let go of a little bit of my “healthy” eating. That is because ultimately, I have to eat. I have these ideas of what I am supposed to eat, what I want, what I need, what I crave and all of that. But, my experiences here have taught me just how hard it can be for the average person to make these healthy choices. Whole Foods Market is more full of processed and sugary foods, than it is of “whole foods.” The Farmer’s Markets cost 3x as much as the one in Santa Monica, and the discount organic market has older produce that is ready for the trash. Believe me, you can find good, organic and healthy options here. I know it. I used to live here. But, living in California spoiled with variety, convenience and price. I never had to shop at Whole Foods in California. We bought everything at the farmer’s markets.
I initially felt guilty for making choices to buy fruit and veggies that I knew were sprayed with chemicals. Our family has gotten sick for the first time in years. We were exposed to mold. And, I originally blamed that on my poor meal planning and poor shopping decisions.
Pleasure, on the other hand… pleasure has the power to raise your heart vibration and actually bring physical healing into your body. So, what if I eat my chemical-laden grapes with the utmost gratitude and pleasure? What if I just enjoy them today because they are what I have? What if I give gratitude for the experience that helped me better understand how most people have to struggle to get healthy food? It’s gotta work.
So, that’s what I am doing now. It’s important to me to eat the best I can because it does make me feel my best. But, if I live rigid-style how am I going to help anyone? Diets stink. I’m glad I discovered my guilt because I realized I was living in a diet mentality. When you are on a diet you have “forbidden’ foods. This is never going to work in reality.
Guilt is one of those complimentary emotions granted to the good-hearted, bleeding hearts. Believe it or not, it’s one of the hardest emotions to get a handle on. It took me forever to realize how selfish it is to be guilty. How that emotion strips us away from ourselves because it often involves pleasing others. The only real remedy for this is joy — doing whatever truly makes the real you happy.
The next time you feel a tinge of guilt coming from your mama, your spouse or your inner critic, try smacking that experience in the face with some pure happiness. Stop what you are doing. Stop right in the middle of doing it and focus your attention on the happy part of it. Be thankful that you have that experience.
It may be natural to feel guilty. But, that doesn’t mean it always has to be so. You can change your story. You can find the Bliss in any moment. I’m erasing guilty feelings all day long with a simple thought, and sometimes a bite of cookie.
