I’m so excited to share the release of this awesome new fermented foods book with you. I had the grand opportunity of contributing recipes alongside experts, health advocates and chefs like Donna Gates and Kevin Gianni.

The book, “Cultured: Make Healthy Fermented Foods at Home” boasts recipes like watermelon kimchi, homemade miso, kombucha, and the healthiest of chocolates, kefirs and MORE. Plus, this stuff seriously tastes great.

But it’s not just about recipes. This is a very user-friendly compilation of history, how-to’s and what-for’s on fermented foods, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.

Kevin Gianni (editor of this gorgeously delicious) book says that “Fermented Foods May Be the Healthiest, Most Affordable and Easiest to Make Superfoods on the Planet.” And, I couldn’t agree more. You know I love these foods for more than just their taste. They totally helped save our family from autism , candida, acne, seizures, acid reflux and so much more.

Homemade Garbanzo Miso Recipe

5 cups dried garbanzo beans, soaked overnight (traditional soy is used, see side note*)
1 cup sea salt
3 tbsp unpasteurized miso
5 cups koji
1 cup cooking liquid

Equipment:

A one gallon glass jar or a crock of similar size
Plate, lid or wooden disk that fits snugly inside the jar
Heavy weight or clean rock
Thick cotton cloth to cover everything

Cook the beans until soft. Strain and save 1 cup of the cooking liquid. Allow beans to cool and dry in a strainer for an hour or two. Process beans in a food processor for desired texture.

Dissolve 3/4 cup sea salt into 1 cup cooking liquid to make a brine. Mash the 3 tbsp unpasteurized miso into 1 cup brine. Mix brine (containing salt and 3 tbsp miso) with the koji.

In a big bowl, add processed beans to this brine mixture. This is your miso.

Packing for Fermentation: (I often do this part first while the garbanzos are cooling.)

Wet the sides of the jar slightly with hands dipped in water. Place some salt inside the side of jar, put the lid on or cover, and shake it around, coating all sides and bottom of jar or crock with a salt layer. Pack the miso into the crock/jar with clean hands, press down firmly. Spread a generous layer of salt over the top. Place the flat object on top and put the weight on top of that. Cover with cloth and secure well with a tight rubber band, string or tape.

You have the option to continue the fermentation process, and like with fine wine, it only gets better with time. If you decide to continue fermentation for another year it is good to test it out and repack it again with salt.

Miso years are calculated by the number of summers it has aged. So, if you have gone through one summer of fermentation, then you have one year old miso. I like to start my miso projects in the spring time, so they are ripe and ready to experience the warmer temps of summer when they tend to be more active.

*You can make this recipe using soy beans as well. Just be sure to use organic soy, since there is less chance of genetically modified contamination.

What is koji and where can I find it?

Koji is a Japanese rice on which koji mold spores have been cultivated. This process allows for the fermentation of koji rice, which is the primary ingredient in sake. Although koji spores can be bought, they usually have to be bought from specialty importers. However, fermented koji rice that has already been inoculated with the spores can be found at your local Asian grocery.

Helpful Tips:

It is important that your miso is packed tightly, free from oxidation and protected by the salt layer. The cloth will also help to keep out impurities and unwanted bacteria.

Label your crock/jar with the date. Store the jar in a cellar, basement or other cool, dark spot where it will remain undisturbed. Have patience and ferment for one year. (See “miso years” above.) Open, scrap off top layer and celebrate with family and friends… your very first batch of homemade miso!! It should smell rich and savory like tamari. Pack it in clean, glass jars with plastic lids and refrigerate or store in a cool place.

Spicy Probiotic Sunflower Seed Hummus Recipe

Fermented or probiotic foods are all the rage right now because we are finally recognizing their power to help heal and re-establish balance in our gut bacteria.

Digestive health is the basis for all health, as 80% of our immune system lives within the microorganisms in our gut. Our digestion is ruled by these tiny micro-organisms, called micro biome that literally outnumber our own cells 10:1. That’s right, our bodies are made up of about 10 times more bacteria than cells.

The human body alone doesn’t have the enzyme production to break down all of the food we eat, so we depend of the power of our inner probiotics or “eco system,” as one of my mentors, Donna Gates would call it — to digest our food for us, and deliver nutrients to our other organs.

These beneficial bacteria also create vitamins for us, protect us from illness, detoxify poison and continue to accommodate MOST of our health needs.

Probiotic foods were the very first step in my son’s autism recovery. They weren’t the first food or remedy that we tried. No way — you moms know how it is when your child is sick. You will go to the ends of the planet, researching and re-researching, asking for help, and making the connections to get them well. For our family, probiotic foods were the first natural remedy that showed us significant healing results for his autism symptoms.

Coconut kefir was the first probiotic beverage we tried, and it has remained a staple in our diets.  It helped my son heal quickly from many infections including pneumonia, and gain eye-contact in less than a month. That’s why I add at least a little bit of  coconut kefir to many of my recipes. If you have children with allergies like asthma, they can often tolerate small doses of coconut kefir because it is known to be more hypoallergenic. Not creating a histamine response.  Whereas, something like kombucha tea, which is a wild ferment — may be too much for their sensitive systems to handle. Coconut kefir has even been known to reduce overall allergic response for my clients.  Thankfully, science has caught up to this ancient wisdom that we conscious mamas have been using for years to heal our babies.

The Human MicroBiome Project, which launched in 2008 spent five years studying the micro biome in depth, which led to a surge of independent and university studies — and more people healing naturally.

My book, “Are You Eating Your Bugs” debuted this year as well. After working on it since 2011, I suppose now is simply THE TIME :).

This hummus recipe here is a delicious way you can add these healthy bugs to your plate. It’s a very forgiving recipe in that you can add extra spices or take out ones that you don’t like. It calls for soaking your sunflower seeds, which is necessary to remove the phytic acid. Phytic acid is sort of like the seed’s way of protecting itself from being eaten. (Incidentally, most natural foods we consume have some protection factor like that… all nuts, seeds and grains contain physic acid and must be soaked, sprouted or fermented  for us to fully absorb their nutrition).

Sunflower Seeds are packed with their own nutritional power too. They contain Vitamin E, which helps cardiovascular health and have even been known to reduce the risk of heart-attack. High in selenium and magnesium and low in allergens, these amazing seeds happen to be something that’s well tolerated by many of my sensitive clients too. Then add in the healthy fats, minerals and protein, and you get a near-super food. My son Dougie and I were extremely low in selenium and magnesium when we were tested years ago. Part of that was our inability to absorb due to low stomach acid. So, I created this recipe to help us absorb these minerals. My body craves this and I feel awesome after eating it. Hope you do too.

If you take just a little more time with this recipe you can sprout your seeds — which not only makes them even more nutritious, but also increases your yield. Score!

Spicy Probiotic Sunflower Seed Hummus Recipe

Feeds: 5 hungry husbands or the equivalent.

Prep time: 1-2 days

Uncook time: 5 minutes

Equipment:

  • High speed blender
  • Large 32 oz mason jar
  • Knife
  • Lemon juicer or hand

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups organic  raw sunflower seeds (no shell)
  • 1  organic green chili pepper, chopped
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 2 Tbsp Organic Olive Oil
  • Sea Salt to taste
  • Splash or 2 oz of fermented coconut water kefir (or other probiotic beverage)

(Optional — Pick one or a few of these to spice it up a notch: cumin, turmeric, curry powder, black pepper, paprika)

Prep:

  • Make your kefir
  • Simultaneously, soak your sunflower seeds in the large mason jar — filling the water to the top, and adding a splash of coconut kefir to the water. Swish the jar around or lightly stir with wooden spoon.
  • Soak for 8-24 hours.
  • Choose whether to sprout or move to blending.
  • Sprouting Option: Rinse sunflower seeds and return to jar, rinsing 3-5x for (up to) 24 hours. Little tails will grow. (cover with screen or cheesecloth)
  • Blend your sunflower seeds with lemon juice and olive oil.
  • Add spices and sea salt and blend more, and taste.
  • Scoop into a beautiful serving bowl, and stir in a splash or more of coconut kefir.
  • Dress the top with chopped fresh herbs if you like.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Use as a dip for cucumbers and other cut-up vegetables.
  • Spread it on sandwiches and wraps
  • Use as a sauce- base for vegan pizzas
  • Lick it off your fingers because it’s so yummy
  • Take it to parties and feel fancy for sharing something so wickedly healthy that your friends will love (and not even notice it’s healthy).

Ok, I’ll tell you a very short story. I threw a big birthday party for my daughter this year. All of the food had something fermented in it. Many of our friends hadn’t had “our food” before, but everyone ate heartily. The next day, I received several phone calls about the deliciousness of the food, the good feelings people had in their tummies as well as some T.M.I. about the poop happenings of my guests. This stuff  not only helps nourish you, but will also help cleanse you. No one seemed to mind the poop part. They just felt they needed to share.

Autism Recovery Journey: Healing Earth’s Autism

Autism is on the Rise

Studies tell us that we are at epidemic rates of a mysterious, puzzling disorder called autism (autism spectrum disorder) among humans. But, ever since meeting my son again in this lifetime and experiencing his life with him, I have correlated his way of being with the wonders and the ills of nature, and in particular –our planet herself. In this Time of our Reality.

Because Mama Gaia (Earth) Has a Message

If Mama Earth were given an expert evaluation, I assure you that she’d come out with a label of ASD. And, not JUST because these labels make money for the system who keeps us sick. But, because all of Mama Earth’s symptoms add up to a toxic overload that expresses itself in the form of regressive development (bees becoming extinct, more animals being born with birth defects, loss of minerals in soil, loss of crops); inability to socialize appropriately for her age (Mama is at least 4 billion, and her cells (US) struggle to communicate); digestive and systemic organ malfunction (earth quakes, tornadoes, climate change).

Understanding the Gift of Change

Now, I’m not implying that these are all BAD things. They are Mama’s way of pushing out the toxins that she has been unknowingly injected with — (pesticides that inhibit her nervous system and so much more). Mama’s outward expression of war, planetary upheaval and confusion stems from her body’s need to push out toxins and renew herself. She is healing. She will survive with or without us. Her autism-like symptoms are her message. It allows us to know what she needs. We can either give it to her, or quite honestly — she can take it and sacrifice us. As her cells, we are quite adaptable to her toxicity. We can learn to live in an unhealthy environment. BUT, Mama knows best. She knows how it feels to be whole and she wants to get back to wholeness.

I’ve worked with hundreds of children with autism and have lived with my own boy for 7 years. I’ve seen the hand- flapping, toe-walking, tantrumming, head-banging, seizures, diarrhea, allergies and more. And, I see these symptoms as our bodies’ way of trying to cleanse, balance and get back to WHOLENESS.

My son was unable to break down proteins due to a lack of proper bacteria and enzymes in his digestive system. We discovered this because he was spinning. We observed when the spinning began, and correlated it with his indigestion of proteins. He spun to balance internal overload with output. He was relieving himself. To ease his pain, we removed protein except for in its predigested fermented form, and then healed his gut so that he could digest on his own. He NEVER had a spinning spell again. When needed, our son would spin, hand-flap, make buzzing noises — all to bring his inner and outer body into wholeness. As he healed, we joined him in these activities to help him feel recognized and help us understand what was going on and why. When it was possible, we would lead him out of repetitive activities.

It’s remarkable to me how we are designed in such a way that our bodies can bring us into balance– even if our conscious minds are unaware of what’s going on. But, in quantum physics, if we observe something…. that is to say, if we become aware of it– the results change. The results are now at least partially dependent on the observer.

So, imagine KNOWING that when your child is tantrumming or spinning, this is a needed step in his return to wholeness. What is bringing him out of wholeness? If someone cannot digest protein (for example), feeding them streak does not give them any protein. This food becomes toxic to them. It putrefies in his gut. So, in this case you’d be dealing with a complication of toxic overload from undigested food, allergic reaction to said food and protein deficiency.

This chain-link of reasoning behind autism symptoms can leave a parent feeling very confused and alone. 

The journey to healing speeds up once we embrace the gifts of this change. These symptoms are taking you somewhere. They are not meant to leave your children in pain. It’s quite a leap for some to trust their instincts and take their healing back to Earth, and slowly ALLOW nature’s power to do HER wonders. To hug the Earth is to experience one of the most healing vibrations that we know.

But, we are taught to jump into recovery, killing autism and all of the bad bugs that come along with it with chelation, factory-made supplements and the like. I didn’t have to go there. I simply embraced our mama. Supplements and modalities that do work are the ones that mimic nature– and I have experienced their usefulness for short-lived periods of time.

Why do you think Mother Nature would react in earth quakes and climate change?

Her condition is not a mistake. It is just as it needs to be in order for her to move on to her next phase of consciousness.

When I met my son, and learned that he had autism, I understood that he came here to be the way he is so that people can learn what he and the earth need to heal.

People with autism carry this message of higher consciousness. They are different thinkers. Some call them neuro-diverse. We are headed into a phase of consciousness where human caca like banking systems, governments and institutions are crashing and being re-born differently.

When the dust settles, what’s left will be a diverse group of people with far more intellectual, creative and manifestation power than ever before.

It’s not time to control or medicate and put these beautiful souls in a box labeled autism. It’s a time to listen to them and do everything we can to ALLOW their amazingness to come through.

We are Just as We Should Be

Science continues to prove a divine plan, and although we have some pretty extreme manifestation powers, we are not working at this alone.

Our kids with autism are just as they should be. They are fulfilling their purpose quite well because people are waking up all over the place. But, being as they should be and being sick are two different things. I see it as part of my own purpose to help people wake up to the fact that accepting autism has nothing to do with accepting illness. Once the key to the illness part is discovered, everyone can begin feeling better. And neuro-diversity is not illness.

If you’re a mama or a dad of an angel with autism, know that she/he is here to teach you too! So, as we join hands in gratitude for the blessings– we discover even more healing.

We are All Healing

Healing is what healing means to you. And, I’m not trying to sound like Forrest Gump. I’m only reminding you that only you can feel your purpose and your path. You know where you are supposed to be.

I see healing as change into a place that feels better. I see it as a letting go of what feels wrong and embracing what’s right. And I’m so grateful to be alive at a time when I can experience this with you.

These days there probably isn’t one of us who does not feel the residual energetic effects of our Mama Earth’s auto-immune disease. It’s real and we know it. But at the same time, we have the power to help one another transcend it.

We are not our labels.

As a matter of fact, we are perfect. We simply forgot that. If we remembered our perfection and the light that we came from, we would understand our power to heal.

Let go of all that ails you today (whatever you call it)! It’s your key into higher consciousness!

Raising Psychic Children

20120314-080909.jpg The other day, my son went up to a young woman and asked her about the baby in her tummy. One that she had yet to publicly reveal. At home on our couch, he went on to tell me that she’s having a girl with light brown hair. He does this often. A few months ago on the train he dragged me up to a woman who he had to speak to. He asked her about her son “Bern, ” the “chef” who lived in another state. The woman, taken aback, began talking about how much she missed her son, but that she was so proud of him for living his dream and having just officially completed culinary school.

Now, he’s channeling dietary advice to friends on Skype. He’ll text message things like “eat salmon and fish and chicken broth” during conversations. What’s significant about this for me is that I often get my “messages” in terms of food. I’ll just know what someone can eat to help them. Now he’s doing it alone and right on point with what I would advice. He’s also very serious about the way life was when he was on Mars. He can give details about the soil. The truth is that all children and humans are psychic. Our kids are way better at it than we are, and if you are reading this you absolutely have a psychic child. The advice given here can increase anyone’s psychic ability and enhance our physical health as well…. Our intuitive abilities are imprinted in our DNA. We were born to instinctively understand how to protect ourselves, grow and connect with nature. A very easy example of your psychic ability is to remember how it feels when you “know” to get away from another person or situation. The Fight or Flight response is something most of us can agree that we have. When we follow the instinct, or  natural survival response, we open channels for more psychic (vibrational information to come through).

We are sensitive to subtle energy because we are built from subtle energy. We take in loads of information all day long — media, facts, interactions with people, meals, you name it. And this information is filtered and will be stored correctly without much thought given to it. However, we have been conditioned to completely ignore the fact that each and every ounce of information we take in also has a vibratory frequency that is detected by our energy body, and deciphered through our pineal gland. “The seat of the soul” according to De Cartes. Our pineal glands are the functional, measurable, psychic part of us. This pineal gland, also known as our third eye, has been cherished throughout history in ancient cultures.

Artwork from Sumeria, to the Mayans and even Egyptian pyramids glorified this magickal gland. We call it “pineal” which derives from “pinecone” and that’s exactly how it looks in the center of our brains. In fact, this gland has all of the inner components of your seeing eyes and may very well be responsible for the visions you have while dreaming. It is filled with fluid, and the balance or imbalance of this fluid is used to detect brain tumors on brain scans. The Hindu Bindi is a decorative gem worn over the third eye, and we still see this all the time in our current society.

For those who celebrate the Hindu religion, this pineal gland, or 6th chakra, represents the manifestation of stored energy or Kundalini energy. It’s hidden sacred knowledge. Knowledge from within that culminates when the connection is made through all of the lower chakras. This makes me think of an activated pineal gland as a gift of inner-sight that is rewarded to those who make those connections. We know it’s something desired by many today. Just look at the American dollar bill and you’ll see the third eye symbolism atop a depiction of a pyramid. The Pope carries a pine cone atop his staff. And his house, the Vatican, is chock-full of pine cone symbolism and god/goddess relics that one would assume would be hard to find in a Christian haven.

Pine cones are everywhere loves. From corporate logos to religious art to money money money money. And if this post was solely about our pineal glands I could go on forever about how intentional that is.

So, when Dougie senses what’s going on in another person’s  body, he is using an innate gift that we all have. Children are born more connected, aren’t they? But, this isn’t JUST because they just arrived here. In fact, Dougie’s been around longer than I have. Many of the children being born today are very old souls who have come back with remembered skills and wisdom, and they are coming to parents who can support that in them. So, if you have a noticeably psychic child, have no fear, they have chosen you for a good reason. We now understand that our pineal glands actually may calcify over time. This strongly inhibits our psychic ability. To my knowledge, this was first thought of as an inevitable part of aging. However, there’s loads of evidence that shows diet can play a huge role in calcifying and even de-calcifying our pineal glands.

A child is born into the world without already having eaten years and years of processed foods. This is another big part of what gives them the one up on us adults in the psychic department. Their communication equipment is cleaner. Aluminum is a big pineal gland destroyer. And aluminum can be found in most drinking water, vaccinations, cook-ware, deodorant, food containers and many processed foods and spices including tortillas, breads, chips, and baking powder. There have been studies linking aluminum cookware to Alzheimer’s, and for good reason. Even my son Dougie, the amazing psychic, has been tested to prove an overload of aluminum in his system. This was years ago, while he was still going through major healing from autism-related illness.

So, now you know what makes us all psychic and what makes our kids better at it. Let’s talk about how you can support your children on this Blissful path, and what your role might be.

Eat Clean You don’t need to fret over how many calories or carbs you are having, just keep your eats as free from chemicals, pesticides, and genetically modified franken-foods as possible. Organic fresh food has a higher frequency than food that’s been sitting for a day or a week. Higher frequency foods have a way of connecting us to higher frequencies… So like attracts like in this case. Enjoy many colors of foods and listen to your children’s cravings especially if they are healthy. For example, if your child really digs cucumbers and wants to eat five per day… Go with that. And commend them for choosing something so healthy. This will affirm their intuition.

Work on You Record your dreams in a journal and make a positive intention to remember your dreams before you fall asleep. These dream memories may only be a sentence long at first, but they are very important to remember. When you sleep, your physical eyes and analytical mind is turned off. You are closest to the natural psychic you. Take time to do things that make you feel good. Meditate, pray, do yoga, listen to music. Not only is this good for you, but it shows your kids that they can do the same for themselves.

Listen to Wild Stories Does your son or daughter talk about when they used to be a grown up, life on other planets or their “other family”? These could be past life stories that are important to remember. Listen intently without saying much other than to support the story. Our memories can be jaded by experience and time. If you can record or write down these stories for them to have, this may be very helpful for them in the future. When Dougie talks about Mars, I ask him questions like a reporter would. Things I really want to know. Like, “so why couldn’t you plant green beans?” or “what were some of the plants you could grow?” But I will only interject my questions when he is finished talking.

The same goes for dreams. You can ask about your child’s dreams. But, my suggestion is not to be too leading. So, you might lightly ask, “what did you dream about,” first thing in the morning– and then simply listen without pressing for answers. Then you might wait a few mornings to see if he comes to you to share his dreams. I will drop whatever I’m doing to listen to one of Dougie’s stories.

Freedom at Home So many of these children have been around the moon more times than we have… And they remember it. Allow for as much freedom at home as is possible for their safety. I’m talking about allowing them to cook food, create and hang art wherever they want to, clean, organize, pick out clothes, pay at the grocery store, pick groceries, call friends and relatives who they want to speak to. This will allow them to align more quickly with what they like and who they are.

Play Time For children, play is their work. It helps them solve problems, hone skills and really just explore life. A child with a noticeable psychic gift is still living in a developing child’s body. Lots of playtime is important because they need to decompress, and feel like a kid. I recommend lots of outdoor play as the sunshine is good for their moods as well as Vitamin D intake and of course, the Sun regenerates us. Earth vibrations, like from being bare foot in the soil are also very grounding and calming. Keep electronic toys at a minimum as the man made vibrations can be very disruptive to their senses.

Experience, Expose and Encourage Allow each experience to unfold without expectations. Your child will lead you through stories or signals for what they desire. Generally speaking, our desires lead us to our life’s purpose. Expose them to music of many cultures, languages, colors, stories and positive people of all shapes and colors. Encourage creative outlets like singing, dancing and painting. This is how shamans often connect with their healing gifts. Our art has a way of exposing our soul. And that’s a good thing. I don’t like to make assumptions about my son’s art. instead, I will ask what he made and how he feels about it. Often it’s not what I thought at all.

Unschooling Keep in mind that public education was designed to create beings with set responses to authority. This line of thinking is what got us here having to discuss how to raise a psychic child. We are out of whack with our natural selves because we have subscribed to a system that forces us to try and be like everyone else. Funny enough, we’re not really all that different. But, we must step into our whole selves which includes embracing all of our abilities. Unschooling represents the undoing of that old paradigm. It’s in the experimenting with what we like and want that we discover who we are. As an Unschooling mama, I am pleasantly surprised with how well my son can read, write and analyze data. Unschooling is not about not learning… It’s simply about unblocking that which was holding us back from learning these hidden treasures about ourselves. If you know that regular school is best for your child, trusting that instinct is part of embracing your family’s psychic ability. My suggestion in that case is to take these Unschooling vibes into your home life and feel how that inspires you. Who knows what the future holds for our psychic children? But wouldn’t it be nice to support this ability in them so that they have even more opportunities ahead?

We are all psychic. That doesn’t mean that we are all going to become professional healers. This intuitive ability is needed in every position in the world from mothering to presidenting.
