Tell me, what’s your take on carbs? Are they good for you? Or bad? Where’d you read that? More importantly, how do you feel when you eat carbs? Or fats? Or sugar? Have you dabbled in superfoods, herbs, vaganism? Paleo? How about raw foods? Do tell.
What Food Works ?
Have you ever supermarket-stalked those uber sexy model-lookin’ babes whose skin glows and hair whisps in the breeze as they trot on their clouds of fairy dust passed you with carts full of …. What is that? What is she eating that makes her look so good? Then, maybe you get a confusing glimpse of what’s actually in the cart and think…. Oh maybe that’s for her boyfriend or something… Admit it! You want to know what works for people.
I know I did. I wanted that skin. But more-so, I wanted that energy. I used to be so deplete. And I pretty much always ate healthy according to our current but outdated food pyramid and FDA recommendations. But, as soon as I wised-up and did my own personal research and experimentation– I learned that the keys to eating healthy, and even eating to heal illness were really very simple. And, it all began with the notion of doing the opposite of what is publicly “advertised” as healthy.
How Much Does Food Really Matter?
Food Matters. It’s one of the main ways that we get energy. But, once you crack the code on what’s right for you– food doesn’t matter that much anymore. In order to get to this place of satisfaction, you often have to dig deep and really begin to notice how you feel. It can be a challenge, if you’ve been convinced that someone else like your doctor or the FDA could take care of your nutritional needs.
“They” tell us to eat low-fat, and I pretty much did until my late 20’s– replacing things I loved like butter with margarine which is chemically derived. This was not to stay trim, but instead to keep “healthy” and feeling good. But, butter can be a very healthy fat with brain-building, gut-building and hormonal balancing properties. It’s also rather grounding in nature and provides natural healthy calories to energize and keep your metabolism going. We are finding that many of us are deplete in these brain-building fats and experience headache, brain-fog and even autistic or Alzheimer’s-like symptoms where there is a deficiency in saturated fats and fatty acids. I learned this through experiencing my son’s autism journey with him as well as my own candida (systemic fungal infection) recovery.
Personally, I love fermenting raw, organic farmer’s market butter with some olive oil, coconut oil and raw honey to created a delicious, predigested spread that is easily absorbable by your body and has the power to help heal up a leaky gut. The fermenting process breaks down nutrients that may have been harder to digest. This even lessens the load that fats can have on your liver. We also love coconut oil, fatty fish and their oils, and sometimes egg yolks.Yum yum yum!
But, again, “they” disagree. They want you to believe that saturated fats are triggers for heart disease and bad cholesterol, even though they have the opposite effect for many. It’s interesting to me that our brains are in dire need of good fats, and yet doctors for the establishment would tell us to avoid them. Hmmmm… Some of the most beneficial foods in our autism recovery have been fermented cod liver oil, fermented raw butter, coconut oil, hemp oil, fish oil, and other oils. They are anti-inflammatory. When we were raw vegan, I only took cod liver oil out of our diet for about 2 months, just to experiment. For us, no raw vegan supplement proved to be a better replacement. With cod liver oil in particular, in his diet — my son has clearer speech, more organized thoughts and speech, is calmer and overall happier. There is also a noticeable difference in his skin. Without cod liver oil in his diet, he often wakes up with puffy eyes and a headache.
And this is trending now, by the way. So many people are waking up and learning what to eat to make them feel great… And ditching the old food pyramid. It’s highly probable that the old food pyramid (which is the current FDA food pyramid) grew out of an agenda to weaken us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Most of our “fresh” food is sprayed with chemicals that originated as weapons for Hitler’s army. That’s right, common pesticides were first used as neuro-gasses. So, ask yourself why this is not only in our food supply, but it is being mandated and subsidized while our organic food supply is being threatened by big GMO corporations like Monsanto (who are even patenting seeds that already contain pesticides).
I wonder if this whole Fake-Food Movement that’s been rolling out over the last 60+ years has something to do with our collective declining energy and health? Do you wonder this? I wonder why we would even need vitamin supplements. Why doesn’t our food have enough nutrition to sustain us?
I’m Not Buying It
I don’t take vitamins. I don’t eat tofu or other processed soy junkage. Soy, which is a largely subsidized GMO crop has been proven to lower thyroid function, and I’ve felt the energy-sucking effects first-hand. I’m fortunate to be sensitive and capable of recognizing how food effects me.
I don’t buy food enriched with vitamins. I don’t buy eggs with added “omega 3s.” I don’t buy diet foods, convenience foods, packaged –frozen health foods or foods stored in containers like aluminum and plastic that leach chemicals into what we eat. I don’t buy bottled water (unless in Mexico). I steer clear of fresh fruit unless it’s organic, because I’m quite sensitive to chemical sprays. I know this through personal experimentation, and process of elimination. It helps that you can find extensive research that points to the dangers of fake and franken-foods. But, then again, you can find proof for anything. For me, this is an empowering fact. It means that there are many truths and that you can forge your own path. What really works for you? Research the effects of foods that you are intuitively called to eat and cross-reference that info with sources from all sides. Learn why you feel tired after eating corn and why you crave salt or sugar. These are empowering tools. I bet you find that you need to create your own food truth.
If I am going to splurge on a packaged snack, I am going to do it with style. I’m not going to hide from the facts. I am not fooled by the processed food industry. I know that none of it promotes real health. I know that if I eat a bag of chips, I’m not getting vitamins. I’m not getting clean fat or protein. And, depending on the quality of the product, I may be getting negative nutrition. Which is to say that the amount of chemicals and indigestible crap I’d be consuming might leave me hungry. And toxic ( which is a word that’s also very trendy right now).
I understand that vitamin pills will probably go un-absorbed and may even cause damage because they often do not contain the co-factors needed to fully absorb them.
But, I’m not a food priss. Sometimes I know that eating is what’s most important. Over-thinking on the food-front can drive you bonkers. And sometimes, I just plain like to eat to enjoy the taste of something.
So, if I am going to eat “junk food” I’m going to do it with style. I’m going to choose the ice cream because at a least that’s Matt Stone approved, and this dude knows what he is talking about. I met Matt at the Fitness Expo in LA where we both spoke about food. Matt mentioned that you can basically forget about proper food absorption if your body temperature is low. Well, guess what? I was a cold hands and feet girl forever! So are many of my clients who are also quite sensitive and intuitive people. And, I’ve always had nutrient absorption issues.
What does it matter that you’re eating the healthiest food on the planet if none of it is getting absorbed? Believe it or not, I had this issue myself. After using a raw food vegan, probiotic, superfood diet to heal myself from systemic candida, I experienced what Chinese Medicine would call Spleen Qi Deficiency, and also Spleen Dampness. in Chinese Medicine, this means that my temperature was low, my energy was low, fluids were not moving properly, I felt heavy. In essence it meant that raw foods, which are very cooling in nature did not actually heal my candida problem. They simply energized me enough to get to the next step. Most of my clients are in the same boat. Strangely enough my story was beginning to sound a lot like what Matt shared at the conference. I always had the chills. I had a weak bladder. I was underweight, and hungry enough to eat most anything that didn’t run away from me. And again, I was seeing parallels in my clients too. So, I had to dig deeper.
According to Matt’s research and self-experimentation (and work with his own clients), he found that no matter how “healthy,” and we’re talking really healthy like the organic, raw food crazy guru healthy, people ate…. It takes a warm body temp of at least 98.6 to keep the metabolism functioning. So, like I learned in Chinese Med Classes, if things are too cold, your spleen is not going to help turn your food into energy. From Matt’s perspective, we also see the mal effects low body temp have on hormones and therefore enzyme production. This could mean that for some people, eating a cooling raw food diet for a long time, may cause you to not absorb anything. Which kind of explains why I got those once-in-a-while cravings for pizza or ice cream.
Matt has found some healing power in the unlikely form of processed foods. Some processed foods have the ability to raise our body temps quickly and get us out of panic mode. That’s why we go for the chips or pretzels or pizza after we wait too long to eat. In a sense, we a following our intuition. Once your body temperature is raised you can go back to eating more balanced. This is not exactly a quick fix, although it may feel like it. For example, you can have a great relationship with a slice of pizza and completely regain energy and feel amazing, but for complete relief, you would need to find your true balance.
Think For Yourself
If you are having thyroid and adrenal issues, this would be something to think about. What can you do to warm you up and start your metabolism going? I don’t advocate junk food for health– but I fully acknowledge its potential. I would hope that some sugar, salt fat and carb -laden natural dish could have the same effect. But, according to Matt Stone’s talk, ice cream is totally where it’s at.
So, I put it to the test.
I figured that at the very least, ice cream will provide me with some fat to get my metabolism going. And let’s not forget that it’s just plain delicious. I postulate that the joy response triggered by ice cream will boost my serotonin, make me happier, nicer and more likely to attract hot clients and cool conversations. Processed health foods, like soy protein powder, may do just as much harm to my body without making me smile. This way I also save money for the farmer’s market because ice cream is cheaper than power bars.
Experiment For Yourself
I’ve experimented with a few of Matt’s suggestions which for me translated into allowing myself to have some sugar, gluten and dairy, and less liquids. All liquids cool your body. This also relates to frequent urination and spleen dampness. Perhaps there were other nutritional factors in the cheese or bread that I had overlooked before. Typically, if you have candida overgrowth and spleen problems you’d want to avoid these foods that cause extra dampness or mucous in your body. Another crazy paradigm buster. These foods should’ve made me feel sicker. All it took me was to enjoy a small amount of this “new food” and a good intention, and my body temp is normal, I have more energy and feel much better. I think I might write another piece about how healthy food was killing me… Too dramatic?
Well, it was kind of killing me. My favorite part of this new food awakening is that I’m eating some sweet foods again, which simply opens up my options. I’d always had the sneaking suspicion that candida feeds more on imbalance than it does on sugar. But as part of our recovery from candida and autism, I removed all sugar for nearly a year. Even fruit. Maybe this does need to be done in extreme cases. I think I only required the ice cream jolt because I went from one extreme to another. As a quite sensitive person on all levels, not creating restrictions has been the best gift I’ve given myself.
Now I’m eating raw and cooked fish, an abundance of raw and cooked organic vegetables, some seeds and grains, some raw dairy– preferably fermented with BACTERIA, bone broth (bye bye vegan days), tons of coconuts, avocados, and occasionally pizza because it makes me so happy –and I’m traveling and having to improvise. I’m eating what I feel like eating. Simple stuff. I’m not saying “no” because of dogma. I’m saying “no” because I don’t want certain foods right now. Eating food and not skipping meals is far more important for me now than having the perfect meal. I’m having no reactions to some gluten or cheese. I’m feeling energetic. My skin would make the old me so freaken jealous. And, the raw fish feels very good for me. I digest it so well. I’ve laid off the quinoa for a bit and sometimes have some rice or lentils, because it’s what feels best now.
I’m sure as time goes by this too will change for me. When I was raw vegan I felt sooo good for a pretty long while. But, by nature I’m thin, cool, and sensitive. I feel much warmer and grounded with animal products in my diet.
Trust Your Gut
I’ve learned to eat intuitively, and go with the flow of change. My needs change. When I went raw vegan, there was a paradigm shift in me. One that had been brewing since the day I was born. Raw Veganism inspired me to eat slower, more consciously and closer to the earth. It inspired mucho gratitude and mucho physical and spiritual health. But, it so did not sustain me. There was a point when I had seizures and realized I was very deplete in nutrients and food energy that can only be gotten through incorporating animal products into my diet.
I hated the thought of eating animals. And, now that I’m in Mexico, foster-parenting chickens — I find my bleeding heart even more in-tune with nature. I truly don’t believe that any human can have all of the answers about what we NEED to eat. But, for some reason, right now– I’m flying on cloud BLISS with a small amount of meat in my diet.
Now, I don’t crave anything, because I don’t allow myself to become deplete. Food is delicious. Food helps bring people together. I’m an advocate for the cleanest most high-vibe eats possible, growing and sharing our own food, and being informed about what our food is made from so that we can make educated choices. And, now I see the purpose of foods beyond my slanted vegan perception. There is healing power everywhere!
Own Your Truth
I’m intuiting a lot of information about why many people are gravitating toward veganism and vegetarianism. It makes so much sense for the planet and does loads of good for personal detoxification. Raw food, in particular is vibrationally very high, and can help open your pineal gland. Many of my students intuitively go raw when taking Psychic Skool. But, there is so much that we don’t face as humans. Scientifically, it’s super difficult to really pinpoint where we even came from. We don’t necessarily “fit” in nature the way other animals do. So, how can we compare? A great raw vegan diet pretty much encompasses the necessary nutritional profile to keep you going…. If lots of other things are in place. I may go back to it one day. For now, the animals (fish) who I eat are okay with me consciously consuming them… Which I do a few times per month. I also fully understand that there is no death. Life energy continues infinitely.

Whip these chips up in a jiff and have a healthier snack for your family. Dip them in guacamole, hummus, seed cheese, or your favorite spread, and store in a paper bag. Plastic makes them all mushy. If you want to have a bunch on hand, it’s best to make extra dough and freeze until your ready to dehydrate and eat them– because they taste better this way. And they won’t last too long in the fridge.
- 3 large zucchini squash
- 3 large carrots
- 1/4 cup chopped green onion
- ½ cup fresh dill
- 2-3 tsp celery seed
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- Pinch sea salt
Shred your zucchini and carrots in a food processor, add in chopped green onion, dill, celery seed and olive oil and sea salt — and process for about 1 minute. Your mixture should be slightly sticky.
Raw Method: Spoon cracker sized servings onto dehydrator sheets and dehydrate for 5-6 hours. Flip your chips every two hours. I use an Excalibur dehydrator at 115 degrees.
Baked Method: Spoon cracker sized servings onto a greased pizza stone and bake on low for 2-3 hours or until crispy. Flip your chips after 1 hour.
Variations: add spinach, arugula, and vary the herbs for different flavors.

I was never a deep follower of astrology. Mostly because I never found the time to absorb all of the math involved, and I’m not interested in the trendy horoscope stuff you find in the check-out lane next to the tabloids. I want the real deal. So, I waited until I was ready. I’m by no means an authority on the subject, but my reading is revealing how my personal summer of cleansing for the sake of consciousness boosting, and the global occurrences of the “Occupy” groups, assassinations of “terrorists, ” and the “elite energy’s” grappling to retain power over the people– has all been written in the stars.
While I certainly haven’t followed astrology, I’ve had my own recent astral travels and dreams through wormholes, into alternate dimensions and galaxies and have been made aware of the needed upcoming changes in our way of life here on earth. I’ve also been made aware though my communication with guides, in dreams as well as through my own reading and studying that we have plenty of help from nature and source energy (God, Goddess, Spirit, Angels, Guides, whoever/whatever you like to call it) during this transitional period. We have been evolving since we came into being, but these days are proving to be a rapid evolution of consciousness that opens up our awareness of our connection to our planet even more.
In order to incarnate here, it seems we decided to lose our true divine nature. Perhaps that was necessary to accomplish all of the technological advances throughout the centuries. After all, pain inspires humans. But all of that pain that has piled up over time has been sitting in our collective emotional bodies, awaiting for the right moment to be set free in healing. Could this have been set in the stars too?
Tonight’s a new moon in Scorpio which completely cosmically supports my own families personal efforts to cling to mama earth energy ( as we are Eco-fying our RV and offering ourselves to the world as healers). This energy is also completely supportive of the needed disconnects that had to happen for us this summer, as our path becomes clearer. Globally, we all need to shift our intentions and attention to the needs of our planet because she provides us with everything we need for survival, and as I am learning — so much more than that once we jump on board. The “negative” energies of blaming, judging and resisting are old patterns that we taught ourselves. Perhaps as survival mechanisms. A lot of those negative energies are surfacing just as parasites resurface when you go on a cleansing diet. It’s their final call for help.
What I think we really need to understand is that these negative energies are a valid part of us that feels it must fight to survive. We are energetically and cosmically supported, and will thrive if we learn to welcome in and help shift the intentions of that small percentage of ourselves. It is not your sister who is fighting you. It is you who is fighting you.
The world is set for growth and it says so everywhere. Personally, I’ve never been so sure that it’s okay to reveal my truest thoughts as I do now….and I have a recollection of my past lives. What we feel personally is a microcosm of what is going on across the planet. Centuries ago, groups like the Free Masons or Illuminati were formed so that people could freely share their ideas. Perhaps their original agendas were pure and only kept secret for their safety. Now, the threats to our safety from these groups who have created unhealthy restrictions on our food supply and money (to name a few) represents our own fear that we cannot control our own lives. I see these as old patterns that are dying. While they seem real, they do not represent the rich planet that we actually live on. Once we all come into our power by connecting to the earth, and our purpose here, the need for hidden negative agendas will fizzle away. And so will the need for secret societies.
Threats are really only as real as we make them. If we focus more on what we love rather than what we fear or hate, we will be gifted with more of what we love. I keep hearing the words of a farmer I met last year who said….’nothing good ever dies on God’s earth’. This planet will survive. And all that is not innately good for the earth will transition into something that is. To me that means that to some extent the recent upheavals are good for us. We are evolving and it will get as messy as it needs to be for us to wake up.
When you begin waking up to what life and you are really made from, you have no choice but to serve the planet and her people. You will find that these days it is much easier to purchase goods that harm our planet than those that support her. Most grocery stores, clothing stores, malls, etc. sell products that are made from toxic materials that harm our atmosphere and the people making them. Much of the money you spend on these products goes to make rich people richer so they can invest in secret money trades, chemicals and processes that further harm us all. Down the line you will notice that much of these items cannot be recycled or cause even more damage to the planet to recycle them. Food that lines your grocery shelves is devoid of nutrition yet full of things that can kill you. And worse yet, if you’re savvy you can see the conspiracies behind why our food is making us sick. The smartest of us know that even eating organic and shopping at a health food store doesn’t guarantee food safety and is sometimes simply another trick to take more of our money and punish us for our conscious consumerism. Despite all of this, or perhaps because of this, I see a huge light. A light that says to get even closer to the earth, dig deeper. Learn more. If the grocery store was perfect, what need would we have for growing our own foods?
The earth misses farmers who planted crops and tended to them. There is plenty more space on this earth that is still untainted, and even much that can be healed. Getting close to the ground and creating a garden says that you can control your food supply. The connection with the earth’s rhythm is so healthy for you that companies have successfully replicated it for sale and it’s used in healing cancer and autism (to name a few). Get your hands in the soil and you get that vibration running through you free of charge. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, working closely with plant life is considered very restorative to your jing ( like your essence…. Breath of life). It’s also helpful in restoring balance to your yin which is your structure- bones, blood etc. Your yin is your female energy. When you hear of the Divine Feminine, you are hearing about that collective feminine energy that we have forsaken for centuries. This energy is the core we are built on. And, because it has been lost for most of human existence here…. We are crumbling. All of the recent public outbursts that threaten our power and health are symbolic of how we a crumbling at our core. But, when this happens, it is important to know that rebirth is really the only option. Death does not exist so that is not an option. We are not truly threatened, but challenged to get closer and closer to the truest truth for us.
Getting closer and closer to nature has helped me keep balanced and feel safe and positive while I see others trembling in fear. Of course I believe in a creator, and guides and those energies have helped me. And they are also a part of nature. When you can delete from your life any energies that you come across which harm nature (for me this means chemical-laden foods and products, negative media, etc) and welcome time outdoors and in meditation, you will see that you only crave more of the same and your awareness of your purpose also becomes much more clear.
Go stick your hands in some dirt, my friend. Take time to enjoy your planet. The rewards for taking care of her are beyond what I can describe. And, you are fully supported during your time of massive expansion.
Spring and summer may be the best times of year for detoxification (from processed foods, sugar, dairy, gluten and standard American toxic eating) — if your body has the strength to cleanse. Chinese medicine tells us that the warm weather supports the natural release. During the warmer seasons, we crave lighter, more cooling foods and liquids that help push out poisons and relieve our liver from all of its filtering work. But, if we follow Chinese medicine correctly, we would also set a time for building our core strength to handle this season of release.
I find that even if we still have toxic build-up, many of our kids with autism as well as my clients with very sensitive systems need more energy to do that. Often their organs for detoxification are a bit sluggish. This has definitely been the case for my family.
This bone broth is amazingly mineralized, and can help strengthen us at the core.
This makes a huge pot you can store leftovers in glass jars.
- 3 lbs bones ( I used chicken that was already roasted.. you could use raw)
- Coconut oil
- Handful cloves
- Handful fennel seeds
- 1 1lb bag baby carrots
- 4 bulbs garlic, peeled
- 4 onions, chopped or sliced
- 1 bunch parsley, whole or chopped
- 1 Bunch cilantro, whole or chopped
- 1 bunch celery, whole or chopped
- 1 cup dulse flakes
- 1 knot kombu whole
- 3 inch burdock root,whole or chopped
- 8 inch ginger root, whole
- 1/4 lb shiitake mushrooms (anti-candida), whole or chopped
- 1 cup raw apple cider vinegar
- 2 cups lemongrass dried or 3 large lemongrass sticks
- Cumin, garlic powder, turmeric, sea salt
+ Raw Mineral Soup
- Coconut meat and water (about 1 for every 2 people)
- Cilantro, chopped
- Chili flakes
- Begin by lightly sauteing onion, fennel, cloves and garlic with chicken bones in bottom of soup pot with butter and coconut oil. (or steam with water)
- Add bones and 1/2 the raw apple cider vinegar throw in root veggies (carrots, ginger, burdock)
- Fill pot with water and let simmer for a few mins
- Add in celery, dulse, kombu, cilantro, parsley, lemongrass
- Cook on low/med for 6 hours covered, adding water as you go
- Season with sea salt, cumin, turmeric, garlic powder, more apple cider vinegar
- Add your mushrooms cook for 6 more hours on low/med, adding water to keep it from evaporating
- Simmer this soup for 24 hours
- When done, let cool and then skim out any bone fragments
- In your blender, blend up the rest of the bits and pieces of veggies and spices with broth, then strain so that you are left with a clear brown broth.
- Taste the broth and season to your liking
- You may add more garlic.. (that’s what I do)
- You can jar this broth and you can even freeze it
- It will be good for about a week in the fridge
For a delish raw and cooked soup
Blend 1 cup broth with water and meat from 2 coconuts and add cilantro and chilli flakes + other seasonings to taste to create an amazing mineralicious dinner.
Huge Yummy UPDATE: I just made this broth with elk bones from the Chicago Farmer’s Market in the crock pot. The onions and veggies melted into the soup. I simply skimmed the bits off the top. Then, added more fresh herbs (cilantro, garlic, ginger, onion, tarragon, cumin, curry, and lime juice) for flavor, salted, and drank that broth like there was no tomorrow. My body just loves this stuff. You can blend this with rice, raw or steamed veggies or my fave coconut option above.

I get a lot of comments and questions about how to get picky eaters to eat the way my son does. These are great questions because tons of children out there.. sick or not… autism or not — are picky eaters.
Being a picky eater is not a “bad” thing to be. Children have naturally sensitive taste buds to help protect them from poisonous foods. They naturally crave bland and push away the bitter foods like kale and cabbage. So, how is a mom of a sensitive child on the autism spectrum supposed to use diet to help heal her child when he/she refuses to eat? I’ve got about ten zillion tricks up my sleeve, and I’m going to share some of the most important ones here.
Understanding Digestive Bacteria and Gut Health
The bacteria and yeasts in our guts create the foundation of our health. They help make vitamins for us, detoxify poison and waste, balance moods, and so much more. When the digestive bacteria is out of balance, which is the case with autism, allergies, and all auto-immune illnesses, you will crave foods that feed the pathogenic bacteria and yeasts (like candida).
So, if your child is craving things like processed foods, that is because pathogenic bacteria thrive on acidic foods. In other words, they cannot help but want what their bodies are telling them that they want. When I was really sick with systemic candida, spinach tasted like metal to me. (On a side note: this was also because I was detoxing metal).
Understanding Stress and Eating
Our gut bacteria communicates vibrationally (through measurable electric currents) with our brains through what is known as our enteric nervous systems. Our guts send more info to our brains than our brains send to our guts. It is well documented that stress and the way we deal with stress affects our gut bacteria — and consequently our thinking, moods, energy and more.
My feeling is that if we create stress around eating, we open the door for candida and more pathogenic organisms to grow in our childrens’ guts — even if we do finally get them to chug down the fish oil or green smoothie. Whatever you do, attempt to do it with a sense of calm… or do not do it at all. Sure, we may have to introduce healing foods that our kids may have a hard time with at first. But, that’s why we go slowly and calmly.
Create a Strong Trust Bond with your Child
Knowing that there are reasons for our kids to be picky eaters, and that children with sick guts may be even more picky — helps us to begin diet changes from a place of ultimate understanding. Add that to unconditional love and you will be set.
My friend Shannon from BEDROK introduced me to the Son-Rise program several years ago. And, although I could never afford to do the program myself, I believe in the concepts and have adopted my own version of Son-Rise at home. I think that it offers a great starting point for creating that trust bond with our kids.
You can do this at home by first listening to your child. If your child is saying “no” to a certain food… listen to them. Say “okay, not today then,” or something of the like. But, then you eat the food yourself, enjoy the food and try again with them the next day. Allow your child to know that you are trusting their opinions.
When you want something from your child, first create a scenario where you are interacting with your child on their level, at their activity – -and introduce the new food in a comfortable setting.
Emotion does not enter your trust bond building phase. Yes, you love and kiss and smother your child with affection as much as you like always (I do with mine), but do not show emotional pain for their eating choices. Make it really up to them with major suggestion (so to speak).
I like to intro 1 new food at a time to help the children get acclimated at their own pace. I will offer the new food every day for 2 weeks in a very relaxed, delicious, and un-demanding way. I do not award or punish with any kind of food. So, my child always eats. We do not tell him”no dessert” or anything like that. The new food is a part of the meal.
If your child does not like the new food after trying it, then you can move on to another new food and try that one again in a while. I like to tell Dougie something like ,”okay , we’ll try that when you are six. Can we do that?” Remember that our kids are people. We all have our own tastes. Yes, this is affected by our gut bacteria, But there is more to it. If someone is completely repelled by a food, they may even have an allergy to it.
Forget the Broccoli and Spinach. Go for Fermenteds!
When you really want to change your diet to improve your health, I always recommend skipping right past the veggies and on to the fermented foods (if you have a picky eater). Fermented foods contain the healthy, living bacteria that will re-populate in your gut, and literally change your taste buds. Fermented foods are pre-digested. So all of that nutrition is so easily absorbed by your body.
Many children with autism are given laundry lists of supplements that they need to take. Parents have the hardest time feeding them food and getting their supplements in because the children have taste and texture issues. We recovered Dougie by first addressing his gut problems with fermented foods. We didn’t go for all of those single extracted vitamin or nutrient supplements. I believe in healing with whole foods and adding in supplements as a last resort.. but after the fermented foods are started and the trust bond is created.
Because fermented foods are so nutrient dense, you do not need to give your child lots of them. In fact, gradually increasing small doses really helps set the tone for lasting results.
There are also many ways to make fermented foods taste good. I began with coconut kefir which can easily be mixed in an organic juice (raw, preferably). and sweetened with green stevia.
This small first step will begin to change your child’s gut bacteria. When the gut bacteria becomes more balanced, they begin to crave more healthy foods.
Check out these crackers and ice creams for more ideas on making fermented foods taste good for your children. Food should taste good. It should make us happy. You can focus on including something your child really likes (in it’s healthiest form) with their new fermented foods.
I think it’s pretty smart to start children off with the fermented liquids. They are much easier to take than vegetable or powders.
You can make home-made kefir, buy fermented beverages from Body Ecology, or another new favorite company of mine, REAL FOOD. REAL LIFE. These are all excellent top quality ways to get the necessary probiotic foods into your child’s gut.
Super Foods Rock
Super foods, like algaes, contain much more nutrition per bite than a salad. I love E3 Live brand algaes. I have used both their regular and their “Brain On.” So, again, these are options for nourishing your picky eater that do not include hours pleading at the table. Algaes taste really good in avocado or coconut based ice cream. They mix almost un-noticeably in chocolate. You can replace cacao for carob in my chocolate recipe too.
Like I said, my favorite healing foods are fermented foods. But second to that, I love algaes. I also love Reishi Mushroom, Cordryceps, Bee Pollen, Cod Liver Oil, Goji Berries. These are foods that work for us. And, guess what? You can actaully buy fermented (which means it’s probiotic and more easily absorbed) algaes from REAL FOOD. REAL LIFE.
These particular herbs and superfoods work for us. You can take any herbs and superfoods that work for your family and add them to a delicious ice cream or cracker recipe to make them tastier for your babies.
Note to the Mamas and Papas:
Eat with your kiddies. Enjoy and give thanks for what you are eating. Make the kids a part of the meal from shopping to prep to clean up (at their level). Go easy on you, and have fun with this. If you are taking on a journey to heal parts of your life, know that you are getting there with each bite.

Cleansing our cells from the build-up of various environmental toxins was a huge part of our recovery. In fact, we’re still doing it. When my son was first labeled with autism, he tested positive for many heavy metals, toxins, viruses as well as nutrient deficiencies. But lacked the core strength to detoxify.
Learning to be patient with our bodies’ natural cleansing abilities and building strength so that we could detoxify without risk of re-absorbing those toxins is one of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn.
As a mom who discovers that her child is loaded with mercury, cadmium, aluminum, antimony, lead (and more), but deficient in the nutrients he needs to develop his brain, detoxify poisons, and live and grow — I wanted to simply kill the “beast” right away. But, my intuition set me on a slower path.
Our bodies go through natural phases of cleansing and re-building. We need the rebuilding phase to strengthen our detoxification systems.
It’s spring now (finally) for most of us. And, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine — spring is the season for cleansing. Your liver has more functions than we can count, and plays a major role in your ability to cleanse yourself of toxins. Your liver must filter every single food, chemical, and even emotion that passes through you.
I thought I’d share this interview that my husband Doug did for Body Ecology last year. In it, he talks about the delicate balance we needed to create in order to detoxify our son. Q: It’s liver cleansing season. Doug, can you tell us how important detoxification was to your family during Dougie’s recovery and if you have changed his diet or added detoxification techniques during this time of year to help him cleanse more?
A: Well, it was clear to me very early on that my son, Dougie was filled with poisons. Many parents have different stories. But our son’s health gradually declined as a result of countless ear infections, throat infections, colds, fevers — you name it. At this point, of course, he was also regressing developmentally, but I didn’t link the two right away. At first, we went the traditionally accepted route and sought medical doctors and medicines to tackle his infections. But, Dougie kept getting sicker. Once he had the croup he kept getting it over and over again. It seemed that he never healed from one infection when another one popped up.
There was a part of me that always understood that there was this deeply rooted source of sickness inside of Dougie, and that maybe if we could conquer that we could get our little boy back. I wasn’t too familiar with the terms of detoxification yet.
At a certain point, the medicine just became too much. My wife, Gina and Dougie were both sick for at least six months without relief from coughs, fatigue digestive pain, and pneumonia. Gina’s health and the fact that she could express her feelings helped us gauge what was going on with Dougie a little easier. Once, we sat in the E.R. for Gina because we were certain that she had mono. They tested her. She had it. But, the doctor just told her to go home and rest. We were like, “What? Don’t you have a medicine for this?” And the ER doctor looked my wife in the eyes and said, “Honey you have been on way too many medications. They are not going to work for you anymore.” We were actually angry with him. We were just taught that there was a pill to solve any ailment. Gina couldn’t rest. She had to care for a sick baby all of the time. And they both kept getting sicker.
Soon after, we visited a new pediatrician for Dougie with the hopes of finding an answer to his chronic illness. We left with cough medicine, electrolyte enhancer, and another prescription for antibiotics. But we also left with a sense of hopelessness.
As Dougie screamed on the pediatrician’s table that day, with his eyes and nose full of mucous and his cough brutal, the doctor spent no more than ten minutes with him before just writing out a prescription and stating that we should give him a flu shot that same day.
And you know what? We would’ve done it. We always trusted doctors up until this point. But, Gina remembered her mom telling her that children should never be vaccinated when sick. We wondered if maybe the vaccine could cure his illness. We had no idea what vaccines really did. We just chose to listen to my mother-in-law’s advice for once. At the time we declined the flu shot, we had no idea of our rights to even do so. Gina just said that we would bring Dougie back for the vaccine when his infections were cleared. Thankfully we never did.
So, when my wife was boiling up the garlic tea to help Dougie push out his sickness, I completely understood that we needed to get rid of the infections that were causing him pain. I understood that the medications were somehow suppressing his natural ability to heal. After all, I could get sick with a cold and get well in two days. But, we chose the best doctors for Dougie, with the feeling that giving our son lots of medicines when he was ill, was giving him so much more than our parents could give us. He was vaccinated 24 times by the age of 18 months. We really thought we were doing the best for him.
We got letters in the mail from the mayor of our city reminding us when to vaccinate. We posted it on our fridge. We were new parents and we were proud to be able to provide such outstanding care for Dougie.
I wanted him to be healthy. My wife and I would do anything in our power to help relieve his pain.
We began detoxing him right away. Even before we found Body Ecology. Even before we completely took him off the prescription medicines, over-the- counter fever reducers and French fries, Gina was giving him Epsom salt baths and trying to get him to drink garlic and ginger tea, which were things she learned about through her research.
Still, we were both afraid of what might happen to Dougie if we removed the antibiotics. We knew that pneumonia could be deadly. Gina and her mom would hold Dougie down to make sure he got his correct dosage. Gina would be on the phone with the doctor’s office asking for advice for how to get the medicine into him. I remember her asking the nurse one day, “When can I stop giving him these medicines, they make him so unhappy?” Our doctors and nurses felt for us. But they did not have answers that helped us. Poor Dougie got to a point where he didn¹t trust us at all. He would seal his mouth shut so tight that if we wanted to feed him anything, he resisted.
I grew impatient with my wife when her attempts at natural healing didn’t seem to work. But, looking back I have to admit that although we were getting him to drink homemade detox teas, we kept him on medications from the doctor for quite some time and we didn’t really change his diet.
I mention all of these details because it took this much time and this much accumulation of toxicity — infections, medications, vaccinations and the negative stress to create the toxic build up inside Dougie. It took so much time for me to fully grasp his toxic load. Over time, we found out that he has tremendously high levels of cadmium, antimony, mercury and other heavy metals.
We saw his health improve quickly after we began the Body Ecology Diet with Dougie.
I understand now that he couldn¹t properly detoxify because he was still being poisoned. Even my stress over trying to get the medications into him and worrying about his health added to his toxic load. Our family home energy was thick with stress.
Little by little we began to recover his physical health by adding fermented foods like coconut kefir and cultured green salsa. We also gradually got rid of gluten, casein, sugar, and processed foods. I listened to Donna Gates’ Detoxification series recently, and learned that the body cannot detoxify if it has no energy. Dougie was completely depleted of energy when we first began Body Ecology.
But in very little time, he began coming back to us. Once the coughs and infections were under control, boy did we see detox! I mean he released so much junk in his stool. As a parent, it was very sad to see that all of these things were stored inside my baby’s body.
But, we had to go slowly. His body was still very fragile. Often times I would come home from work and Dougie would be frantic and tantrumming. We didn’t have all the answers as to why he was acting in such extreme behaviors. We doubted the diet at times.
However, Gina was determined that this diet would work, and until she had a
really great grasp on how to do it effectively for Dougie , we did not practice any other forms of detox for him. Of course, we always felt like we could be doing more, but in the end, I think slow and steady progress is what got us this far.
After about a year of Doing Body Ecology, Gina got up the courage to do home enemas on herself and Dougie to help further detox. I was against this at first. It sounded really strange. But, when Dougie began asking for enemas, I knew they were doing something great for him.
In fact, although Dougie was non-verbal for a long time, when he was receiving an enema, he would often speak full and complete sentences. This was a sign to us that the build-up of toxins had something to do with his lack in verbal language. Gina added home enemas, skin brushing castor oil packs, sound and movement therapy, massage, Reiki and raw foods to our detox plan back in April of 2007 and Dougie’s development soared.
We’ve never gone back. These detox tools remain a part of our life. We rotate them in and out. We are at a point where we don¹t do enemas unless Dougie asks for them. Because, we know he will ask if he needs them. I think it’s important also to understand that although most of us are detoxing daily, our kids with toxic overload seem to be very fragile. They cannot handle very deep cleanses. So you always have to be building them up, energizing them, nourishing them, and making digestion easy so that they don¹t have extra stuff to release.
During the season of liver detox, Gina likes to add in a special fermented beet juice and cultured beet cracker made with turmeric and artichoke among other things. Dougie loves these and they definitely help him cleanse.In fact, because of my wife, my son has learned more about his body than most adults I know. He will tell us when something is good for his tummy or his brain.
We continue to see him detoxify from the many poisons that were built up inside of him. But, the process is much easier now that we have a real handle on how detoxification works naturally in the body.
Doug recently left his job and moved his family across the country in order to spend more valuable time with his son, Dougie. His wife, Gina runs a one-year autism recovery program for families who want to use Body Ecology, raw foods, energetic and sensory healing to overcome the toxicities related to the autism diagnosis.

This Post was originally written in January 2011, at the beginning of our Bliss Tour! It’s cool to see how far we’ve come — buying and selling the RV, traveling the US and living in Mexico for 6 months. Life is BLISS!
Back in December 2010, I drew the “retreat card” from a deck of angel cards and the events that have ensued have been crazy style amazing. I gotta say that as an energy worker and one who constantly witnesses the results of the “super natural” in action –I’m quite the skeptic. I’m not one for tarot cards. I’m not one for listening to “guides” or psychics — UNLESS the messages ring true for me on a deep level. I mean logic has got to play some role in my decision-making.
That retreat card symbolized the simple sustainable adventurous life that Doug and I have dreamed of our whole lives. 2 years ago, the same energy brought us to Santa Monica, CA to get healthier, expand our minds and our business ideas. Things just move fast in Bliss Land.
We’re growing so quickly, we can’t help but feel the urge to use that expansive energy to spread the Bliss to you. I recently wrote a blog titled “How your intuition can save the world.” This trip is my husband’s and my intuitive answer to the next step in fulfilling our purpose.
How can we all live a more sustainable, Blissy, earth-loving life?
We hope to find out. Purging more possessions and gearing up to live in and travel via RV (on veggie fuel and/or zero emissions vehicles), composting, wild food forging, planting, unschooling, sharing from our hearts will help us discover that. So will connecting with all of you.
We feel that there is a better way to feel good and accomplish your goals, and we’re on the road to discover that. It’s time to change things around. Re-allocate the wealth to the people, shift our priorities and wake up to what we can do to help.
Our gift is primarily our energy and our experience. By giving of our truest selves we hope to inspire you to do the same and find your purpose.

I can’t leave you without some chocolate. My Italian Nana taught me better than that. For some of you celebrating easter next Sunday, you might like to make these for your loved ones as a much healthier option.
This is from my upcoming book, “Are You Eating Your Bugs?”
- 2 ½ cup raw organic cacao powder
- ½ cup cacao butter
- ½ cup – 1 cup coconut sugar
- 1 tbsp Vitamineral Green powder
- 1 packet Body Ecology kefir starter
- 1 packet Body Ecology culture starter
- Glass jar or bowl with lid
- Candy molds of choice
Add-ins: sea salt, cacao nibs, and mesquite; cherries, cayenne and sea salt; maca, mesquite and lucuma; , cinnamon,maca, mesquite and lucuma; spirulina and mint; Gojii berries, bee pollen and anything else you like with your chocolate!
- Melt cacao butter at 80 degrees in food dehydrator or in double boiler
- Stir in cacao powder
- Blend with coconut sugar in blender
- Pour into glass jar
- Add green powder and culture starters
- Let ferment for 36 hours
- Add your add-ins
- Pour into molds
Refrigerate and Bliss Out!
