We don’t talk enough about proper food combining in my circles of savvy eaters. So many of my friends and clients are all about eating organic, local, raw, vegan, right for their body/blood type, grass-fed, biodynamic, or whatever. But, when I mention to them that if perhaps they switched up the combos of grub on their plates that maybe they’d drop that extra weight, feel less bloated, gain healing and de-stress – they are often surprised.

Did you know that your body needs to release different enzymes in order to break down different foods and food groups? And, that it can be taxing to your body to combine foods that require different enzymes? Each living food has its own enzymes and every enzyme has a specific function.

Proper food combining refers to eating foods together that can be digested together. Seems like a no-brainer since most of us are aware that good digestion is at the foundation of good health. But, many of the meals we traditionally eat, just don’t work in our bodies.

When we blend foods with varying enzymes, some may get digested quicker than others, leaving the slower digested foods to stick around in your beauteous bod for too long. This also puts a halt to digestion all together. Which means that nothing you eat actually gets fully absorbed. What can happen then, is that those foods can become toxic. Even healthy foods can become toxic if the digestion of those foods is halted. This can feed candida and parasites, wake up viral infections, make you constipated and more susceptible to holding on to the next food you eat. It creates a cycle of blockages. If you’re constipated you know headaches, fatigue irritability, weakness and even smelliness (body odor) prevail. And of course cycles un-wellness can often be traced back to undigested food.

I first learned this concept when I decided to use the Body Ecology Diet to help my boy and I heal from major candida (yeast) overgrowth (and undo his autism), and it worked! Then, when I ventured into my own raw vegan eating, I did discover I could pay less attention to eating things together that don’t necessarily mix well – probably because the food I was eating was so enzyme-rich. This can mean less work for our bodies. Of course, I’m a huge fermenter and good fermented food is predigested (already broken down), so your body doesn’t need to produce more enzymes.

Digestion definitely slows during pregnancy. Midwives and books tell me it’s the hormones. But I also suspect it’s the fact that candida yeast also naturally rises. It’s all connected.

At 11 weeks prego, I went way out of my usual eating comfort zone and had a little too much peanut butter, watermelon, chocolate – you name it. It was Mothers’ Day week, and my hubby made so many treats. I guess he didn’t expect me to eat the whole tray of peanut butter brownies or a whole watermelon. But I did. And, I totally felt the aftermath.

I spent that whole week in bed with morning, noon and night sickness. My fall from the grace of sacred pregnancy eating began on a Saturday Morning at the farmer’s market of all places –where I bought peanut butter, watermelon, eggs, and honey to name a few culprits.

Before that, I’d noticed a slight uneasyness in my stomach upon waking each morning that was completely quelled by my delicious superfood smoothies. They sustained me, energized me and kept me free of digestive discomfort for weeks. I was able to do yoga each day and seriously felt better than ever. Even better than pre-pregnancy.

So, where did I go wrong? Aside from eating too much sugar? and peanut butter? And rice flour? Oh geez! Well, first of all fruit digests very quickly.. SO, when I ate cookies, and batter and then ate some watermelon, I literally felt bloated in a split second.

Ever feel that after you eat? Like your gut just bloats out? The watermelon stopped the rest of my food from being digested, and I felt super heavy for days.

Also, knowing that I’m preggers and my digestion is slower, I ate far too many cooked brownies that contain NO enzymes for digestion. This means my body would have to produce the enzymes…. But, yet what kinds of enzymes should my body produce? Enzymes to digest the eggs? The rice flour? The oil? I’m sure the answer took hours to determine.

I came out of it combining most of my meals properly, and adding more digestive enzymes and fermented foods to each meal. My diet is naturally at least 70% raw with tons of superfoods and fermented foods like coconut kefir. I drink at least 16 oz. of coconut kefir each day, which helps quicken digestion. And, it makes us feel pretty amazing too because it boosts serotonin.

There have been times when I’ve intuitively known to combine or not combine certain foods. And certainly no rules for eating apply to every person. You have to know how to check in with your body to find your balance with food.

If you’re in question about whether or not you can get more nutrition out of your food, feel lighter and clearer-focused, and put an end to morning sickness – have a go at these tried and true tips.

Proper Food Combining

Water

Don’t drink it with your food because it actually dissolves enzymes. Have a glass at least 20 minutes before eating, so that your natural enzymes can replenish.

If you want to drink something with your food, try lemon water at room temperature. This can aid in digestion. Also a cup of warm tea can be okay.

Fruit

This is a big one. Fruit digests very quickly and doesn’t really combine with many other foods. If you eat fruits alone, on an empty stomach, you give plenty of energy space for your body to digest.

Since it digests quickly, you can have more to eat a half hour later.

If I eat fruit, I try to eat it early in the day because I have more time to burn that sugar energy and its less likely that something else is in my digestive tract waiting to move on to its next destination.

First Breakfast/Liquid Breakfast

Have liquids (green smoothie, soup, tea) in the morning before bowel movements, then solid foods are okay after you poop. This is simply because your body is waking up from digesting and detoxing during the night and needs to release, and eating food requires your energy to shift back into breaking down more food instead of releasing.

Check in with your pregnant self about this one. You may want to think about what light or blended breakfast you can have instead of a smoothie or soup because you may require something more grounding in the morning. This is one of those guidelines you may not be able to follow during pregnancy. And, that’s perfectly okay. I also find that those of us who tend toward candida, spleen dampness, or low digestive energy can’t often handle too many liquids. They can make us feel heavy.

At times I’ve switched over to bone broth and fish for breakfast which works amazingly for me. In fact, it’s my fave. With some spinach and beets. But, I’ve been known to eat my fish raw… I know… so taboo. It just feels amazing and completely light for me.

Then, I’ll have my smoothie a few hours later. Or when I feel hungry.

Another idea is mono eating. Simply having a one -food breakfast like an avocado, coconut, or squash, piece of meat or some presoaked, steamed quinoa or rice.

If you’re a constipated mama to be that’d be quite common. It happens. Trying this in the a.m. may mean you can have at least one b.m. during the day. I haven’t been plagued by any of these common issues. Except for during my one week of bed -ridden-ness.

Proteins and Carbs

Don’t mix them. (example: meat and potatoes, rice and beans). They require different enzymes for digestion.

(Some disagree, of course. I’ve heard and read that rice and beans make a complete protein. I’ve also heard that potatoes have a way of decreasing the toxicity in meat. It may work for you if you have much stronger digestion. However, it hasn’t been sustainable for me, other than times when I’ve known I needed something different. Cultured vegetables also convert meat toxins into useful amino acids.

This was one of my biggest lessons. I learned it way before becoming prego.

Animal Proteins

If you eat meat, eat it before 2 pm for ideal time to digest. Honestly, the rarer the better for digestion (sorry vegan loves).Cooking meat does kill off enzymes needed to digest it and also reduce the protein. I try to eat wild caught meats, and thankfully I’ve manifested a life where that is so available. I’m loving eating wild salmon and deer from my friend in Alaska. Yum! And, this I know is instinctive because I completely cannot stand chicken or beef right now and I rarely crave meat at all in my non-pregnant life. If I can, I like to marinate my meats in cultured veggie juice, apple cider vinegar or citrus and garlic to help break it down and minimize bad bugs. Still though, I’m not getting enough meat to fulfill all of my protein needs, so I do supplement with raw food-based supplements.

Grains

If you eat grains, these are great to have in the evening for dinner, as they help release sleep hormones. Make sure to soak and even sprout your grains to remove enzyme inhibitors and make them digestible.

Some women crave grains during pregnancy because they seem to quiet nausea. If this is you, definitely soak, sprout and try cooking on a really low temp to retain as much of the nutrition as possible. When you soak them, you’ll find that they require far less cooking time too.

Starchy Veg

Eat these with leafy greens and other non-starchy veggies.

These can be a total goddess-send for some of my prego loves. Although they don’t usually contain as much nutrition per bite, they are often great for grounding and easing nausea. I’m getting tons of beets which are so needed right now. And, I’m blessed enough to share space with so many organic growers, that I get fresh from-the-garden squashes all the time. YUM!

Fat

Eat lots of good fats while prego. Your baby’s brain and your mood will thank you. Try to combine them only with sour fruit like lime or with herbs and non-starchy veggies.

I like to keep my fats raw and only cook with coconut oil which can stand higher temps. I take fish oils and also eat hemp oil, olive oil, raw butter and ghee as I wish. And, I wish a lot!

I even occasionally throw a raw egg yolk on top of some cooked greens, allowing it to cook on the heat of the greens. Another taboo on the raw egg front, but so full of nutrition and good for my body.

I haven’t been too in love with nuts during this time, but they can offer good protein and fat, like egg or avocado—if you can handle them. Nuts, like grains are most often more digestible when soaked first.

I also find benefit sometimes in roasted almonds. They might help you feel grounded.

Your Plate

if 80% of your meal contains leafy or non-starchy veggies like spinach, kale, collards, broccoli, veggie soup, salad etc and 20% is either grain, meat or starchy veg, you’re setting the stage for a meal well digested. Keeping lots of it raw will help kickstart that too. Of course adding in coconut kefir cultured vegetables or enzymes helps even more. If you cannot really do raw foods, try adding in more raw cultured foods. I’ve found, in my various stages of needs changing, that this really creates balance for me.

Getting Full

Try only eating until you are 80% full. Again, this leaves room for digestive enzymes to do their thing.

Your Body Knows

Your intuition is divinely heightened during this time. So, really tune -in and learn the signals. If you are craving eggs or meat there is a reason. If you are uber turned off by them, there is a reason. If you get gassy, bloaty or smelly there is a reason. If you are way more tired after you eat, there is a reason — and I’m convinced that pregnancy can be a time of amazing wellbeing, if you tune-in.

See how you feel when you mingle healthy fats with fruits… some people feel great eating these together. Try not eating starches with your grains and see if that helps. Even one of these steps can help you make huge improvements.

Being ultra sensitive during this time is your opportunity to understand your body better and build the way of eating that works best for you. All food has the potential to be medicine for you if you eat it in the best way for you.

Check Yourself

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, your spleen has to transform food and drink into energy. When your spleen is deficient, you may have a pale face and tongue, fatigue after eating, fullness in the belly and loose stools.

If this worsens, it can progress into diahrreah, candida overgrowth, cold feet and hands, a desire for warm foods and discomfort from eating raw.

Chinese Medicine also teaches that one extreme can become another if not addressed. Diarrreah becomes constipation. Extreme cold can become extreme heat. And, by simply beginning with the way you eat, you can ease the burden on your spleen. If you are preggers and experiencing really uncomfortable issues, there may also be herbs you can try to help you. I love reishi mushroom. For me, this really does the trick.

Also, things like massage, dry skin brushing, yoga and acupuncture can activate your digestive system.

It’s All about YOU

While this post mostly refers to my way of eating, you can take any food that’s already on your menu and apply these concepts for digestive relief and to get more nutritional bang per bite. Most people do not get the full nutritional value of their food because it remains undigested. You can change this with food combining differently.

Green Food is Good

Allow me to introduce you to Spirulina,  one of our most favorite super foods! With all of the hype about GMO- Monsanto-Franken-Neuro-Toxic-Mutant food, I wanted you to know that you can still get pure amazing nutritious HEALTHY food. Food that can even negate and detoxify you from the ill-effects of eating the packaged poop stuff.

And prevent further damage.

Spirulina, a form of blue-green algae,  boasts 10 times more beta carotene than carrots, is about 65% protein and provides us with essential fatty acids, phytonutrients, probiotics, and antioxidants.

Millions of years ago, before we were even a tear-drop in Mother Nature’s eye – Spirulina flourished. The nutrients contained in the spirulina plant helped our planet evolve. It’s perhaps our earliest ancestor.

To me, it offers one of the simplest ways to end world hunger!  You actually need less food when you eat it because it takes care of so many nutritional needs. It grows easily and well in lakes and oceans, and I’m just discovering that it can even be grown in soil.  Think of what savvy organic growers could do with this stuff!

At times when Dougie and I were in deep healing from his autism and my candida — we THRIVED on spirulina. Just adding it to our diets made us happier, gave us energy, and REALLY curbed sugar cravings. Plus it helps tremendously with brain-fog.

The plant has undergone intense studies for the passed 30 years, and proves safe for the little ones as well. So, don’t worry so much if they won’t eat their lima beans – push the algae, and get super healthy kids.

Dougie had his first serving at age 3 years and 1 day. And, at 3 years and 1.5 days– he was potty trained. That’s without practice. And, experts told us he had autism, and that meant we could expect delays and complete lack in development.

The first time he ever had the kicked-up spirulina blend from Bio-Age (Bioage.com), he buttoned his shirt for the first time. He lost a tic that he had for a few months, and over a small period of time — he began to speak more clearly. We saw so much developmental BLISS with the BIOAGE Algaes, that we removed most of our other supplements. It’s still a staple.

It reduces brain swelling. It sends nutrients where they need to go without making your body work so hard to digest. This is majorly important in autism and many cases of common illness like allergies and auto-immune dysfunction because digestion is so compromised.

My hubby used it as the main healing tool in helping him recover from a seizure disorder and a 12 year reliance on some pretty harsh prescription seizure meds.

Why wouldn’t we want to use spirulina to feed the hungry? It would open their minds and lift their spirits while nourishing them!

Consuming spirulina (algae) has been linked to recovery from diseases like cancer, ADD, and autism. Research also shows significant progress in its effect against the AIDS virus. In my time working with private clients, I’ve been able to see clarity of mind come back to people with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s through the use of  spirulina.

Spirulina is a super food  –which means it is a complete food. Think — something they’d eat on the Matrix. People use spirulina to enhance energy, detoxify poisons (sugar, alcohol, mercury), control weight and balance mood.

Spirulina for Dinner?

So, the question is how does it taste? I’m sure you don’t want to be making yourself an algae salad three times a day just so that you can tout gorgeous skin and enough energy to keep you awake through the night, right? I gotta be honest — some of it is pretty gross! And, while it can be taken in pill-form, you’ve got to watch that you get the purest kind that is without mercury…because if it comes from a toxic lake its got nothing but chems,  metal and junk to share with you.

It must be pure. And, I have my favorites. I’m quite fond of Healthforce Nutritionals TRUGANIC Spirulina Manna. I LOVE Real Food Real Life’s Pro-Daily Otic, which is a fermented blend of algaes (green, grains, seeds and sprouts). Both of these taste so good that  I even get my non-health-food-lovin’ friends to crave them. They can easily blend in a smoothie and even be hidden under some raw chocolate as you transition to adding it to your diet. But, once you’re like me and crave this stuff — you’ll find it tastes great in salad dressings and dips too.  Courtney Pool wrote a whole book on spirulina recipes!

How Much Spirulina Should You Eat?

Always go slowly and learn about a food’s energy when adding  something new to your diet. Spirulina has an expansive energy which means that it pulls your energy up. For some, this can mean headaches. If you’re feeling hyper or light in the head, that can mean you have some stuck energy, and spirulina can exaggerate that. Not to fear.  All greens have expansive energy. Balancing this out with the “grounding” nature of good quality sea salt is enough for some people to really benefit from this amazing algae minus the headaches.

My recommendation to my clients is usually to begin new healing foods even more slowly than suggested on the label, and take close note of how you feel. When you reach a point where you feel good, you may have hit your ideal dosage. But, it has to be built-up-to.  Traditional Chinese Medicine says it takes 100 days of an herb to start feeling the true benefits.

Most people don’t need to consume lots of spirulina to get great results. It’s potent stuff. The more you consume, the more detoxifying it becomes. Smaller amounts can address nutrient deficiencies from the core up. The way I see it is if you are deficient, like we were, it makes sense to go slowly and really allow the algae to work.  Our family shares a spirulina smoothie almost every morning, and we only use about 1 tablespoon of manna or 1-2 capsules of BioSuperfood brand (much less than recommended) in total. In the colder months, we may have  a little less, or at least combine it with more warming and heavier foods in our smoothies like avocado, coconut and cinnamon.

I find the fermented algae from Real Food Real Life to be more grounding.

The fun of natural health is that you build it. Your nutritional needs and tolerances are unique. It’s cool because the experimentation makes you so much smarter about your body and what you put in it. GMO food just causes tumors and sterility.  No fun!

A Heart of Green

Green foods open your heart chakra. It’s becoming even more popular knowledge that our emotions matter. In fact, they create vibrations that actually heal us.  The vibrations that come from your heart chakra are 500+ times stronger than those that come from your brain. So, yes, your thoughts matter. But real brain connections that create change in your life only happen when there is a corresponding emotional experience with your thought.  When you open your heart to emotions like love, gratitude and forgiveness — your body heals. Spirulina opens your heart chakra in the same way! Seriously… have a few servings and tell me if you don’t feel grateful and in LOVE with life. Food can be a healer for our physical and emotional health.

Here is My Fave Way to Eat Spirulina… in Chocolate Of Course!

I wasn’t going to let you leave without this.   This is a recipe for my fermented chocolates. Raw chocolate or cacao is another heart chakra opener!  Some of my clients have a hard time tolerating plain raw chocolate.  But the fermentation and addition of these healing herbs and SPIRULINA seems to take care of that.

I like to add spirulina to it to balance out the acidity in the cacao, and add nourishment. Who knew it would taste so good? Most of my friends are pleasantly surprised.

Cultured Cacao-Wows

Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups raw organic cacao powder
  • 1½ cups cacao butter
  • ½ cup – 1 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tbsp Vitamineral Green powder
  • 1 packet Body Ecology kefir starter
  • 1 packet Body Ecology culture starter
  • Glass jar or bowl with lid
  • Candy molds of choice
  • Blender

Add-ins: spirulina, vanilla sea salt and mint;  sea salt, cacao nibs, and mesquite; cherries, cayenne and sea salt; maca, mesquite and lucuma; , cinnamon,maca, mesquite and lucuma; Gojii berries, bee pollen and anything else you like with your chocolate!

Process:

  • Melt cacao butter at 80 degrees in food dehydrator or in double boiler
  • Stir in cacao powder
  • Blend with coconut sugar in blender
  • Pour into glass jar
  • Add green powder and culture starters
  • Let ferment for 36 hours (keep in dehydrator to keep in liquid form)
  • Add your add-ins
  • Pour into molds
  • Refrigerate and Bliss Out!

Bliss Cleanse 2012 Eating for Manifestation– Recipes, Results and Breakthroughs

We decided to change things up a bit in Bliss Land and try a full cleanse in honor of aligning with our higher selves.

Food is not only a way to get energy, but food is vibration itself. So, of course we started playing with food — even more-so than we usually do. This cleanse incorporates high vibrational raw living foods, wild foods, power herbs, and nutrient dense superfoods. Plus, we are focussing a lot more on keeping our thoughts aligned with what we really want.

Do you know how much energy is truly wasted when you allow your mind to drift into worry, doubt and fear?

So, there will be meditation, yoga, and plenty of surprises– and of course, we are planning to share how it changes our lives.

The best part if this cleanse is that each of us is honoring our unique needs and therefore may eat slightly differently and choose different practices.

The Recipes (from 9/18)

Herbal Elixir

Ingredients:
1 cup herbal decoction from 9/17
1 whole coconut (meat and water)
1/2 large avocado
1tsp cinnamon
1-2 cups carrot, ginger, celery, fennel juice (fresh)
Chlorella
MSM (for skin healing and bone healing from car accident last year)

Process:

Blend all of the ingredients together and drink as much as you need.

Us three adults had about 12 oz and Dougie had 6 oz. Then, I drank more later on in the day.

Zucchini Noodles and Sauce X 2

Ingredients/ Sauce 1:

3 cloves of fermented garlic (fermented in olive oil, coconut oil, honey, coconut kefir and raw apple cider vinegar for 30+ days)
1 avocado
1 cup sun-dried tomatoes
Juice of 1 lemon
Dash sea salt
1/4 cup delicious raw organic olive oil

Process:

Blend and mix into raw spiral-sliced zucchini noodles

Ingredients/ Sauce 2:

2 tblsp GF Dijon Mustard with horseradish
1/4 cup of amazing olive oil
Juice of 1 lemon
Sea salt
Cumin, curry powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and a sprinkle of nutmeg
Shaved almonds

Process:

Whisk all ingredients together except almonds and mix into your bowl of noodles. Top with almonds.

Kale Chips ( We didn’t eat these entirely raw for purposes of Thyroid Love)

Ingredients:

1 lb of yummy kale
Juice of 2 lemons
Coconut oil and olive oil to completely coat kale
sea salt, garlic powder, curry, cumin, cayenne and nutmeg (in keeping with flavors in the noodles)

Process:

Cut off kale stems
Drench kale in the above ingredients
Line a baking sheet with the kale leaves
Bake at lowest temp for a few hours or until it reaches your desired texture.
We make them crisp but not burned ( burned food promotes cancer)

Liver Lovin Juice

As we transition into cleansing phase we ate a lot of fat on our first 2 days. We needed it. Fat is a great source of caloric energy, and also warms your adrenals and has a lot to do with brain health. But, we also wanted to give our livers some more help, as our livers must process those fats. Of course raw, organic fats are much easier to digest. ( note: there is already liver support in our elixir… milk thistle, schisandra etc)

Ingredients:
5 carrots
1bunch celery
1 fennel bulb
3 inches ginger
2 whole lemons… rind and all
2 heaping tablespoons of curry powder (cumin, saffron, turmeric, garlic)

Process:

Juice the veggies and stir in the powder

We each drank as much of this juice as we needed.

Doug had about 12 oz. Dougie had about 4 oz and i had about 6 oz. We really didn’t need more.

The key for us is not to feel bloated when drinking, and to moderate our liquid intake so as not to cool down our systems too much, feel cold, have an energy crash or experience frequent urination. These symptoms are a result of over-hydration which I experienced after going all raw vegan for a period that was too long for my body.

By over-hydrating, I actually did to myself what the Chinese Med teachers warned me about– I put out my digestive fire and wound up hungry, losing weight and energy, and being cold all of the time. So, although raw veganism worked for me for a very long time, I’ve had to adjust it to make it more sustainable and this includes moderating liquid intake.

Lemon Bars

Crust Ingredients:

2 cups soaked raw oats
1 cup shredded coconut
Coconut oil
Sea salt
Zest of 1 lemon
Handful soaked dates
Splash vanilla

Filling Ingredients:

Juice of 10 lemons
Zest of 2 lemons
2 avocados
2tblsp coconut butter
2 tblsp soaked Irish moss

Process:

Blend crust ingredients
Add in some coconut oil to both whirl it around and help it stick together once it’s formed
Form into a 6×8 in pan
Refrigerate crust for about an hour

Bone Broth

We had some more bone broth throughout the day. This time we seasoned it like French Onion Soup just for fun!

We also ate 3 yummy salads that Doug made with shredded veggies and various delicious combos of herbs and spices.

And then there was quinoa. All 4 of us really felt the need to have the grounding energy of quinoa.

Breakthroughs:

We are really not eating much differently than we usually do. But there is a lot more intent to stay on a high vibrational level.

We made a vision board and are of course seeing exact things come into fruition. This always amazes me!

If you remember that one of our goals was to help Dougie, cognitively. Well, we’ve seen results in the first day. He is truly connecting deeper with concepts we’ve been working– on especially with math.

Healing really happens when you sleep!

When you are awake, your immune system is awake–fighting parasites that threaten your skin, or battling fight or flight situations. But, when you sleep, your immune system goes deep within and can do things like re-populate your gut with healthy bacteria, transfer waste where it needs to go, give your organs a rest and so much more! Many of us are constantly in fight or flight stress mode and cannot heal no matter what good foods we eat.

I am grateful for the intention to get myself out of stress mode and get some real energy back.

I have been able to spend a whole lot more time meditating, and napping together with Dougie each afternoon.

Plus, we have been getting the boy in bed at moonrise. This is an amazing feat. We are very grateful for his new schedule. 😉

Bliss Cleanse 2012 Eating for Manifestation — Join Us!

Got too many things whirling around in your mind to focus on what you really want? It happens! 2012 has been a year of massive shifting in consciousness, and we’ve all learned so much about our purpose. I keep saying it, but it’s oh so true — people are waking up everywhere!

For once, the things that consume Doug’s and my thoughts are EXCITING images of all that we have. We’re reeling in the abundance of supportive friends and beauty everywhere! It’s kind of ironic when you’ve got a mind so full of awesomeness, that you get stuck materializing that awesomeness into what you know is supposed to serve the world. We have so many more gifts to share with you. So, many that we can’t hardly contain ourselves. It’s taking everything we have not to completely spill the beans. But, we need more energy to go through with some of the work involved. We need more focus. I could say we are a bit stuck. But, we know that these moments are the most inspiring for us. These moments when you think you are stuck, may actually just be catalysts for needed change.

Bliss Cleanse 2012 and What it’s All About

For us, this is about reclaiming our energies and providing ourselves with all of the necessary comforts and tools to shed what is not working. And, to make more space for what IS WORKING.

For you, we hope you will take our inspiration and build a cleanse for yourself that helps you MANIFEST what you want!

We will be using food, yoga, meditation and spiritual exercises to help us through. These are things we already do everyday. BUT, we are adding a greater intention and doing them with MORE PURPOSE. When you solidify your intention, and can see what you want as if it is already yours, then you create an emotional response that literally reprograms your thoughts.

Have you yet heard that your thoughts create your life?

Once you have connected neurons (like electrical wires) in your brain with thought and emotion, you will vibrationally attract more similar experiences that triggered the original connection. This is why mantras work. We repeat them and they change our perception and our life.

Food

When I went all raw for 2 years, I felt amazing. I was warm in the winter — contrary to what experts said was supposed to happen. I also became more in touch with my intuitive abilities, and was able to begin offering intuitive services.

When I shared the benefits of a living food, probiotic rich diet with my family, my son spun out of autism symptoms in a blink. And, my husband got rid of his seizure disorder.

As you know, we have been eating some cooked foods and animal products over the last 2 years and that has also proven very beneficial to all of us for gaining strength. The foods we have chosen to eat have been very helpful to keep us energized and focused, happy and MORE!
During this Bliss Cleanse, we will focus on raw living vegan food, raw vegetable juices, wild foods, healing herbs, smoothies, and over all clean organic food. Of course, we will also have plenty of coconut kefir and fermented foods! We have a big pot of bone broth available to us — should we need those minerals and strength! As the fall leaves begin to shed, we too hope to shed any stored toxins from our trip to Mexico, or life in general. It often takes layers of cleansing and rebuilding to reach ultimate wellness.

The 3 of us are each unique beings with unique dietary needs. Our cleanse is personalized for each of us. And, we will share recipes and results with you as we go!

Our Personal Goals

Gina: I want to feel more energized and heal my dryish skin. I’d also like to increase my ability to quiet my mind, meditate and “see.”

Doug: I want to lose some weight and feel lighter. I want to feel a higher energy. I want to feel a better appreciation for food, and shake off my Chicago food taste buds (cravings).

Dougie: We hope to improve Dougie’s desire to learn and participate in home-school activities, his expressive abilities and his cognition in math. He has come very far and no longer displays the painful autism symptoms that he used to have. Yet, we know that healing happens in layers and he still has some viruses and metal poison that, when addressed, will open up his mind and abilities even more.

All 3 of us are intending for a new eco-fied house-on-wheels that will take us around the planet and allow us to bring our gifts straight to you. We’ve been traveling without one, teaching classes all over and really feeling the LOVE. We envision a Blissed Life much bigger. We envision a hunk of land where we can build a permaculture that feeds your souls. We envision luxury! We see it all happening now and are setting out to fill in the space between vision and manifestation with Bliss!

Today’s Recipes

BLISS Herbal Decoction

This “tea” contains lots of liver support, immune support and spiritual-upliftedness support. Our family does very well on olive leaf which controls candida, viruses and infections. Each of these herbs have so many interlinked healing abilities, when choosing herbs, I recommend starting with one at a time and creating a relationship with them.

1/4 cup of each dried herb (I used chaga mushroom powder to help the process go quicker)

Chaga

Schisandra Berry

Milk Thistle

Rhodiola

Holy Basil

Olive leaf

2 quarts clean water

I boiled the chaga for about an hour, and then added the schisandra berries for about a half hour, and then added the rest. I let the whole sha-bang steep for a long while.

Doug and I are drinking lots of it. Dougie is having only about a cup of it.

Bone Broth

We made this one with farmer’s market beef bones and added fennel, ginger, onion, celery and tons of garlic and good sea salt to the mix.

Dougie and Doug are having some. I’m not attracted to bone broth today 🙂

We’ll post the rest of our recipes as we go and let you know how we do with them.

Some People Just KNOW What to Eat: What’s Your Take?

Tell me, what’s your take on carbs? Are they good for you? Or bad? Where’d you read that? More importantly, how do you feel when you eat carbs? Or fats? Or sugar? Have you dabbled in superfoods, herbs, vaganism? Paleo? How about raw foods? Do tell.

What Food Works ?

Have you ever supermarket-stalked those uber sexy model-lookin’ babes whose skin glows and hair whisps in the breeze as they trot on their clouds of fairy dust passed you with carts full of …. What is that? What is she eating that makes her look so good? Then, maybe you get a confusing glimpse of what’s actually in the cart and think…. Oh maybe that’s for her boyfriend or something… Admit it! You want to know what works for people.

I know I did. I wanted that skin. But more-so, I wanted that energy. I used to be so deplete. And I pretty much always ate healthy according to our current but outdated food pyramid and FDA recommendations. But, as soon as I wised-up and did my own personal research and experimentation– I learned that the keys to eating healthy, and even eating to heal illness were really very simple. And, it all began with the notion of doing the opposite of what is publicly “advertised” as healthy.

How Much Does Food Really Matter?

Food Matters. It’s one of the main ways that we get energy. But, once you crack the code on what’s right for you– food doesn’t matter that much anymore. In order to get to this place of satisfaction, you often have to dig deep and really begin to notice how you feel. It can be a challenge, if you’ve been convinced that someone else like your doctor or the FDA could take care of your nutritional needs.

“They” tell us to eat low-fat, and I pretty much did until my late 20’s– replacing things I loved like butter with margarine which is chemically derived. This was not to stay trim, but instead to keep “healthy” and feeling good. But, butter can be a very healthy fat with brain-building, gut-building and hormonal balancing properties. It’s also rather grounding in nature and provides natural healthy calories to energize and keep your metabolism going. We are finding that many of us are deplete in these brain-building fats and experience headache, brain-fog and even autistic or Alzheimer’s-like symptoms where there is a deficiency in saturated fats and fatty acids. I learned this through experiencing my son’s autism journey with him as well as my own candida (systemic fungal infection) recovery.

Personally, I love fermenting raw, organic farmer’s market butter with some olive oil, coconut oil and raw honey to created a delicious, predigested spread that is easily absorbable by your body and has the power to help heal up a leaky gut. The fermenting process breaks down nutrients that may have been harder to digest. This even lessens the load that fats can have on your liver. We also love coconut oil, fatty fish and their oils, and sometimes egg yolks.Yum yum yum!

But, again, “they” disagree. They want you to believe that saturated fats are triggers for heart disease and bad cholesterol, even though they have the opposite effect for many. It’s interesting to me that our brains are in dire need of good fats, and yet doctors for the establishment would tell us to avoid them. Hmmmm… Some of the most beneficial foods in our autism recovery have been fermented cod liver oil, fermented raw butter, coconut oil, hemp oil, fish oil, and other oils. They are anti-inflammatory. When we were raw vegan, I only took cod liver oil out of our diet for about 2 months, just to experiment. For us, no raw vegan supplement proved to be a better replacement. With cod liver oil in particular, in his diet — my son has clearer speech, more organized thoughts and speech, is calmer and overall happier. There is also a noticeable difference in his skin. Without cod liver oil in his diet, he often wakes up with puffy eyes and a headache.

And this is trending now, by the way. So many people are waking up and learning what to eat to make them feel great… And ditching the old food pyramid. It’s highly probable that the old food pyramid (which is the current FDA food pyramid) grew out of an agenda to weaken us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Most of our “fresh” food is sprayed with chemicals that originated as weapons for Hitler’s army. That’s right, common pesticides were first used as neuro-gasses. So, ask yourself why this is not only in our food supply, but it is being mandated and subsidized while our organic food supply is being threatened by big GMO corporations like Monsanto (who are even patenting seeds that already contain pesticides).

I wonder if this whole Fake-Food Movement that’s been rolling out over the last 60+ years has something to do with our collective declining energy and health? Do you wonder this? I wonder why we would even need vitamin supplements. Why doesn’t our food have enough nutrition to sustain us?

I’m Not Buying It

I don’t take vitamins. I don’t eat tofu or other processed soy junkage. Soy, which is a largely subsidized GMO crop has been proven to lower thyroid function, and I’ve felt the energy-sucking effects first-hand. I’m fortunate to be sensitive and capable of recognizing how food effects me.

I don’t buy food enriched with vitamins. I don’t buy eggs with added “omega 3s.” I don’t buy diet foods, convenience foods, packaged –frozen health foods or foods stored in containers like aluminum and plastic that leach chemicals into what we eat. I don’t buy bottled water (unless in Mexico). I steer clear of fresh fruit unless it’s organic, because I’m quite sensitive to chemical sprays. I know this through personal experimentation, and process of elimination. It helps that you can find extensive research that points to the dangers of fake and franken-foods. But, then again, you can find proof for anything. For me, this is an empowering fact. It means that there are many truths and that you can forge your own path. What really works for you? Research the effects of foods that you are intuitively called to eat and cross-reference that info with sources from all sides. Learn why you feel tired after eating corn and why you crave salt or sugar. These are empowering tools. I bet you find that you need to create your own food truth.

Informed Indulgence

If I am going to splurge on a packaged snack, I am going to do it with style. I’m not going to hide from the facts. I am not fooled by the processed food industry. I know that none of it promotes real health. I know that if I eat a bag of chips, I’m not getting vitamins. I’m not getting clean fat or protein. And, depending on the quality of the product, I may be getting negative nutrition. Which is to say that the amount of chemicals and indigestible crap I’d be consuming might leave me hungry. And toxic ( which is a word that’s also very trendy right now).

I understand that vitamin pills will probably go un-absorbed and may even cause damage because they often do not contain the co-factors needed to fully absorb them.

But, I’m not a food priss. Sometimes I know that eating is what’s most important. Over-thinking on the food-front can drive you bonkers. And sometimes, I just plain like to eat to enjoy the taste of something.

So, if I am going to eat “junk food” I’m going to do it with style. I’m going to choose the ice cream because at a least that’s Matt Stone approved, and this dude knows what he is talking about. I met Matt at the Fitness Expo in LA where we both spoke about food. Matt mentioned that you can basically forget about proper food absorption if your body temperature is low. Well, guess what? I was a cold hands and feet girl forever! So are many of my clients who are also quite sensitive and intuitive people. And, I’ve always had nutrient absorption issues.

What does it matter that you’re eating the healthiest food on the planet if none of it is getting absorbed? Believe it or not, I had this issue myself. After using a raw food vegan, probiotic, superfood diet to heal myself from systemic candida, I experienced what Chinese Medicine would call Spleen Qi Deficiency, and also Spleen Dampness. in Chinese Medicine, this means that my temperature was low, my energy was low, fluids were not moving properly, I felt heavy. In essence it meant that raw foods, which are very cooling in nature did not actually heal my candida problem. They simply energized me enough to get to the next step. Most of my clients are in the same boat. Strangely enough my story was beginning to sound a lot like what Matt shared at the conference. I always had the chills. I had a weak bladder. I was underweight, and hungry enough to eat most anything that didn’t run away from me. And again, I was seeing parallels in my clients too. So, I had to dig deeper.

According to Matt’s research and self-experimentation (and work with his own clients), he found that no matter how “healthy,” and we’re talking really healthy like the organic, raw food crazy guru healthy, people ate…. It takes a warm body temp of at least 98.6 to keep the metabolism functioning. So, like I learned in Chinese Med Classes, if things are too cold, your spleen is not going to help turn your food into energy. From Matt’s perspective, we also see the mal effects low body temp have on hormones and therefore enzyme production. This could mean that for some people, eating a cooling raw food diet for a long time, may cause you to not absorb anything. Which kind of explains why I got those once-in-a-while cravings for pizza or ice cream.

Matt has found some healing power in the unlikely form of processed foods. Some processed foods have the ability to raise our body temps quickly and get us out of panic mode. That’s why we go for the chips or pretzels or pizza after we wait too long to eat. In a sense, we a following our intuition. Once your body temperature is raised you can go back to eating more balanced. This is not exactly a quick fix, although it may feel like it. For example, you can have a great relationship with a slice of pizza and completely regain energy and feel amazing, but for complete relief, you would need to find your true balance.

Think For Yourself

If you are having thyroid and adrenal issues, this would be something to think about.  What can you do to warm you up and start your metabolism going? I don’t advocate junk food for health– but I fully acknowledge its potential. I would hope that some sugar, salt fat and carb -laden natural dish could have the same effect. But, according to Matt Stone’s talk, ice cream is totally where it’s at.

So, I put it to the test.

I figured that at the very least, ice cream will provide me with some fat to get my metabolism going. And let’s not forget that it’s just plain delicious. I postulate that the joy response triggered by ice cream will boost my serotonin, make me happier, nicer and more likely to attract hot clients and cool conversations. Processed health foods, like soy protein powder, may do just as much harm to my body without making me smile. This way I also save money for the farmer’s market because ice cream is cheaper than power bars.

Experiment For Yourself

I’ve experimented with a few of Matt’s suggestions which for me translated into allowing myself to have some sugar, gluten and dairy, and less liquids. All liquids cool your body. This also relates to frequent urination and spleen dampness. Perhaps there were other nutritional factors in the cheese or bread that I had overlooked before. Typically, if you have candida overgrowth and spleen problems you’d want to avoid these foods that cause extra dampness or mucous in your body. Another crazy paradigm buster. These foods should’ve made me feel sicker. All it took me was to enjoy a small amount of this “new food” and a good intention, and my body temp is normal, I have more energy and feel much better. I think I might write another piece about how healthy food was killing me… Too dramatic?

Well, it was kind of killing me. My favorite part of this new food awakening is that I’m eating some sweet foods again, which simply opens up my options. I’d always had the sneaking suspicion that candida feeds more on imbalance than it does on sugar. But as part of our recovery from candida and autism, I removed all sugar for nearly a year. Even fruit. Maybe this does need to be done in extreme cases. I think I only required the ice cream jolt because I went from one extreme to another. As a quite sensitive person on all levels, not creating restrictions has been the best gift I’ve given myself.

Now I’m eating raw and cooked fish, an abundance of raw and cooked organic vegetables, some seeds and grains, some raw dairy– preferably fermented with BACTERIA, bone broth (bye bye vegan days), tons of coconuts, avocados, and occasionally pizza because it makes me so happy –and I’m traveling and having to improvise. I’m eating what I feel like eating. Simple stuff. I’m not saying “no” because of dogma. I’m saying “no” because I don’t want certain foods right now. Eating food and not skipping meals is far more important for me now than having the perfect meal. I’m having no reactions to some gluten or cheese. I’m feeling energetic. My skin would make the old me so freaken jealous. And, the raw fish feels very good for me. I digest it so well. I’ve laid off the quinoa for a bit and sometimes have some rice or lentils, because it’s what feels best now.

I’m sure as time goes by this too will change for me. When I was raw vegan I felt sooo good for a pretty long while. But, by nature I’m thin, cool, and sensitive. I feel much warmer and grounded with animal products in my diet.

Trust Your Gut

I’ve learned to eat intuitively, and go with the flow of change. My needs change. When I went raw vegan, there was a paradigm shift in me. One that had been brewing since the day I was born. Raw Veganism inspired me to eat slower, more consciously and closer to the earth. It inspired mucho gratitude and mucho physical and spiritual health. But, it so did not sustain me. There was a point when I had seizures and realized I was very deplete in nutrients and food energy that can only be gotten through incorporating animal products into my diet.

I hated the thought of eating animals. And, now that I’m in Mexico, foster-parenting chickens — I find my bleeding heart even more in-tune with nature. I truly don’t believe that any human can have all of the answers about what we NEED to eat. But, for some reason, right now– I’m flying on cloud BLISS with a small amount of meat in my diet.

Now, I don’t crave anything, because I don’t allow myself to become deplete. Food is delicious. Food helps bring people together. I’m an advocate for the cleanest most high-vibe eats possible, growing and sharing our own food, and being informed about what our food is made from so that we can make educated choices. And, now I see the purpose of foods beyond my slanted vegan perception. There is healing power everywhere!

Own Your Truth

I’m intuiting a lot of information about why many people are gravitating toward veganism and vegetarianism. It makes so much sense for the planet and does loads of good for personal detoxification. Raw food, in particular is vibrationally very high, and can help open your pineal gland. Many of my students intuitively go raw when taking Psychic Skool. But, there is so much that we don’t face as humans. Scientifically, it’s super difficult to really pinpoint where we even came from. We don’t necessarily “fit” in nature the way other animals do. So, how can we compare? A great raw vegan diet pretty much encompasses the necessary nutritional profile to keep you going…. If lots of other things are in place. I may go back to it one day. For now, the animals (fish) who I eat are okay with me consciously consuming them… Which I do a few times per month. I also fully understand that there is no death. Life energy continues infinitely.

Simple and Delish Homemade Veggie Chips

Whip these chips up in a jiff and have a healthier snack for your fam. Dip them in guacamole, hummus, seed cheese, or your favorite spread, and store in a paper bag. Plastic makes them all mushy. If you want to have a bunch on hand, it’s best to make extra dough and freeze until your ready to dehydrate and eat them– because they taste better this way. And they won’t last too long in the fridge.

3 large zucchini squash
3 large carrots
1/4 cup chopped green onion
½ cup fresh dill
2-3 tsp celery seed
1 tblsp. olive oil
Pinch seal salt

Process

Shred your zucchini and carrots in a food processor, add in chopped green onion, dill, celery seed and olive oil and sea salt — and process for about 1 minute. Your mixture should be slightly sticky.

Raw Method: Spoon cracker sized servings onto dehydrator sheets and dehydrate for 5-6 hours. Flip your chips every two hours. I use an Excalibur dehydrator at 115 degrees.

Baked Method: Spoon cracker sized servings onto a greased pizza stone and bake on low for 2-3 hours or until crispy. Flip your chips after 1 hour.

Variations: add spinach, arugula, and vary the herbs for different flavors.
